You're right. It's always a great idea to mitigate a loss of profits by engaging in other behavior that can (will) have negative consequences. Eesh.

I'm curious. There has been a lot of "the buyers knew what they were getting into, so they should deal with their bad luck", but no "Bommo knew what he was getting into by listing these in violation of feebay terms, so he should stick with any bad luck". Is that because he is a member, or just some form of caveat emptor?

To my eyes, both parties took risks, yet only the buyer should face the downside? Or was bommo's risk at the sale end, not the result end?

I stayed far far away from these auctions as I'm pretty wary of box breaks, so I have no axe to grind here. I sell on ebbay infrequently, but when I do, I am very clear about not accepting returns, not making guarantees on condition, and inviting any interested buyers to message me with questions. I do this because I want to cover my butt as much as possible so that negs/returns don't happen. Do I leave some money on the table by not calling my cards "mint, perfect, pack fresh, etc"? Sure. But the extent to which I am a business-oriented person, I am on the very very low risk spectrum. I'm not calling into question the judgment or good intentions of the seller or the buyers, but this whole ordeal might just be proof as to why these sorts of auctions are prohibited.

Nobody forced the buyers to bid on these auctions so if they do try and get their money back they are huge **********.

If ebay terms are violated and take action on Boomo then that is their deal, buyers should not try and make it happen just because they only got one auto and paid 70 bucks for it.

considering all the backseat driving regarding this break by forum jockeys across multiple sites and platforms, I sincerely hope Boomo et al keeps the $ info, # chargebacks, etc. private.

i bought 2 base+ auto lots and 1 gold+ auto lot. shipping label's been printed, so hope I get my haul in a few days. broke about even SV, but i'm sure a bunch will gem+.

VandyDan, you can state all you want that you don't accept returns but EBay doesn't care. You'll lose if you try to refuse a return.

I've had three folks neg me claiming item not as described and ask for a refund. Each time, I called up the customer assistance line, and the negs were scrubbed.

It did help that I am well trained in getting a solid record down in ebbay messages before calling up customer service. But I still am batting 100% when it comes to folks asking for refunds based on condition when I clearly offer none. It is pretty funny, actually. As long as you maintain a calm demeanor and are respectful, buyers do a pretty good job of flatly asserting feedback extortion-like claims. Then it is damn easy to win the claim.

If a buyer brought it to EBay's attention don't see how the buyer doesn't get a refund. Not saying it's right but clearly is a violation of EBay policy.

I seem to recall Mr. Mem posting about busting over 100 cases, back on BMB.

I don't see how eBay could give some people their money back via claim and then not void the rest of the transactions as well. It seems like an all or nothing thing to me because the problem is with the auction style itself, rather than Boomo's service.

For the record, it's incredibly cowardly to lose a gamble and then try to steal your money back.

curious as to why Boomo doesn't run his breaks from his own website, or from here.

If it is eBay that is the issue in terms of not allowing auctions of chance (which this clearly was), why do this through a vehicle that allows for the possibility of chargebacks? I know that eBay has the best publicity, but I'd imagine a lot of the winning bidders came from folks that either post or lurk on here or BO. If it was run through an independent website, no fees, no possibility of chargebacks...and folks around here and BO seem to trust Boomo with these things.

Certainly any additional publicity doing it on eBay might get is far outweighed by the fees and possibility and availability of chargebacks, especially when ebay rules so clearly proscribe these sorts of auctions (or would likely be read to proscribe such things).

this is certainly my plan at some point. It isnt that easy, ebay allows for decent profits and people seem to like to bid. Ive tried many times to get private rips going but most people just shy away.
My feeling is they like the power to set the price. No charge backs yet, i mean does anyone want to really be that guy? and for anyone considering it, the harper auto guy paid 1240, saw not 1 or 2 darvishes pulled, but 3, never said a word, left me a nice feedback and emailed me to thank me. He got a nice gift. People could learn from a class act like that. I did nothing wrong, no one had to bid, 50 cases of hobby are the same as any other year, people know what stuff usually gets and what is tuff and what isnt. I had fun, i did the math, i was 100% right, and made almost to the penny exactly what i predicted pre sale. I am happy for everyone who made out well, oh and it will all be shipped minus a few papers by saturday.

Congrats on sparking a little life back into the hobby which had otherwise flat lined....

Great job Boomo. It was entertaining watching you do that, and the vicarious thrill was much higher than I expected, considering I wasn't the winner on any lots.

I'm curious if anyone has done a kind of summary by player, or even an ROI breakdown. I was paying attention to the break up through the late 20s, but then the weekend came and I was out. I know the Addison Russell high-end lot was a big winner (3 Golds and a Purple, IIRC), but was anyone else way ahead of the odds? Like if you were to grade the results, the Russell high lot was an A+, the Super lot was probably a D- (was there just one?), where did things fall in between?

I'm glad to hear this has worked out so well. Hope it keeps going that way as orders are delivered and everyone gets a feel for what they got. I'm excited to see the Stratton and Ramsey stashes as they seemed to break pretty well for me and will make up for my loses on the Smoral and Watson high end autos.

If I can say one thing, I was jealous of your support staff. That was freaking impressive. These breaks wouldn't seem nearly that crazy if we could all have that sort of help. Glad it's working out and I'm sorry for XXXXXing at you for your breaking style...sure, it could have been faster, but it worked for you and the viewers and that's really all that mattered.
