Salty-blistering start
Andrus-Showing some pop
Feliz-Could be an Ace
Harrison-Good solid pitcher
Jones-Lefty bullpen guy who can throw hard

What do you people think?

Well, being from Rome, Salty was a favorite of mine...still have some of my collection. Tex, well, we definitely didn't use him to his potential...it was a bad trade before these young guys ever become good.

As bad as the trade was, atleast they were from positions of strength. Salty wasn't going to do a thing for ATL. Andrus was beginning to struggle and might not have unseated Escobar at SS. (Escobar being ready netted us Gorkys and Jurrjens by way of dumping Renteria)

Jones and Harrison only have 1 thing going for them, they're lefties. The Braves chose to keep Jo Jo Reyes rather than Harrison, so that should say a small something.

Feliz - we got hosed, no way around it.

2007 saw the Braves in the playoff hunt until the last week of the season. In 2008, the trade would have looked a lot better had the rotation not fell apart last year for the Braves however. They would have been in the hunt for the playoffs with their planned rotation. Regardless, Tex did everything he could for the Braves.

As a Minnesotan I grade every trade like this against two trades:

1) It's no Herschel Walker trade; and

2) It may well match (if not exceed) the A.J. Pierzynski trade.

Worst trade every was

Glenn Davis for Steve Finely, Pete Harnish and Curt Schilling.

Houston knew Steve had a bad back.

If the Braves were able to re-sign Tex, then the trade wouldn't be a disaster (at the time there seemed to be a lot of feeling that by acquiring Tex, Atlanta would be able to sway him to sign a longer deal with the Braves...which I didn't quite understand due to who his agent is).

So, basically the Braves traded a starting SS who should be valuable at least due to + defense, a starting catcher/dh type (Salty) who could be on the verge of a breakout (and any offense from the catching position is a big plus), one of the top starting pitching prospects in the game, etc, etc, for a bit over a year of Tex, Casey Kotchman and Marek. Pretty onesided, in my opinion.

Look at it this way: if the Braves don't do this deal, I think they could easily use some of the players above to make a deal for Jake Peavy (who could be kept for longer than 1.5 years).

Allow me to introduce you to Herschel Walker, two 3rds, a 5th, and a 10th (best player drafted by Vikings from those picks was Jake Reed) for Jesse Solomon, David Howard, Issiac Holt, Darrin Nelson, Alex Stewart, 3 1sts (one of which became Emmitt Smith), 3 2nds (one of which became Darren Woodson), a 3rd, and a 6th.

when the trade happened i said the only guy the Braves would absolutely miss is Feliz...the other 4 are/were good/great prospects, but none of them would have gone any where with the Braves...that being said it was still a bad deal...the Braves basically got Kotchman and Merek for those 5 players.

Like someone mentioned, the trade would have been decent had everything fallen into place for us. In 2007, we were right in the hunt and addin Tex was going to push us over the hump. Then, Edgar got hurt (and remember, he was hitting really well). I remember thinking in 2007, towards the end of the year, that the A+ Braves lineup was rarely on the field together. Someone was always out. It killed us. Then, in 2008, I whole-heartedley believe that we would have contended had we not had a pitching staff of a bunch of 5th starters and middle releivers.

I do when I'm in town. I used to go fairly often. My sister has a part-time job at the stadium working crowds.

At this point I wont be able to make any games this season. I'm in Houston...in fact, I don't get to see the Braves play until September! Last I looked, that's the only time they'll be at Minute Maid this year.

I may be out that way in June. If so, I'll pick up a game at the end of the month.
