Only 4 games?!?!!??!?!??? That's ridiculous. I was hoping for the rest of the season so Vizquel got more than 12 at-bats the rest of the year. :D

I didn't see this thread earlier, but I agree with the 4 game decision. He threw his helmet down in disgust. If it bounces the other way, he maybe gets 1 (or none).
No reason to give him any more than a handful of games for a bad bounce.

Agreed. Sure he made himself look foolish with the tirade but that first one looked like it was almost in the other batter's box

The first call was questionable. It had some movement, and if the ump had been giving a wide outside corner all night it might've stuck. But the second was just for Lawrie showing up on on the first call.

^^^^
This. And if he get more than 5 games, he will appeal based on this fact.

MLB screwed this one up...again. This isn't the first time a rookie got hosed by the ump but players just can't fly off the handle like that. I would have gave him 4 games for the tirade and 4 games for the helmet hitting the ump. I want to see Lawrie succeed but he was way out of line.

I like what another member stated earlier. Lawrie's strike zone just got much bigger for the rest of the season.

Oh yeah. And if I'm the commish, Mr. Lawrie would be peeing in a cup before he set foot back on the field.

4 is fine with me. Yadi Molina only got 5 for bumping the ump last year. The Ump should get a fine for making it personal, sticking it to Lawrie for heading to first on the previous pitch.
Anyone remember Rauch going nuts last year on some questionable calls? Lawrie's plays at 110%, he did apologize afterwards for losing his cool. He knows he messed up.

I think Lawrie caught the Supension-deciding-guy (still Watson or Robinson?) on a good day.

VERY lucky to only get 4 games for this one IMO.

Just wondering if anyone has heard the Umpires' Union chime in on the Length of the suspension?

He plans to appeal it? I'd be happy it was only four, stick my tail between my legs and move on. Maybe it's just a strategic move b/c they are playing the Yankees now.

I can't believe people are sticking up for Lawrie here.
Who cares if the ump blew a call, it happens in much bigger situations than this.
He needs to learn some class from Armando Galaraga. One of these times when guys hit crap or throw stuff some freak accident is going to happen. I guess that is what it will take for these "men" to stop acting like my 2 year old.

Umps are supposed to uphold the integrity of the game because they REPRESENT MLB. He should have known Lawrie is a rook and immature at the major league level. So what does he do...call an obvious ball a strike. na nana na na Lawrie i got you back. That's not how a professional umpire should act.

Hopefully the baseball players union will rally behind Lawrie and drive that ********* ump out of baseball. Or a long suspension at least.

I think that when considering how absurd those two strike calls were the league will be lenient a little bit. Those were two crystal clear balls. Had Lawrie continued and thrown the helmet right at the ref we're talking at least 25 games but since it hit him on a bounce when considering how horrible the calls were I'd say the league goes easy on him here.

On a bit of a sidenote, what do you do when the ump just gets it that flat out wrong? Like it boggles my mind these two strikes, earlier in the year when Helton's foot was 4 feet off the bag, last year when Galaragga had the perfect game and the guy was out by a step and a half, I think when the call is that bad the ref deserves the player/manager in their face. There is just no excuse for those calls and having the manager come out of the dugout and simply say "My gosh I believe you made a mistake there" in my opinion is not a realistic way for an athlete/manager to behave in a live game. I have a lot of years of experience in sports under my belt and when you're battling your ass off out there and a ref or an ump gets it SO far wrong they deserve a nice yelling. With that being said the helmet was too far from Lawrie.

Edit: Looks like the league did go lenient. 4 games
