I don't see how you can be. Greinke helped PUSH you into the NLCS for the first time and into the league championship series since...what...1982? (not entirely sure on my history)...

So you have that. And, sure, you gave up a nice DEFENSIVE shortstop, but a Alcides Escobar (with as poorly as he has hit) isn't hard to come by...and possibly a nice SP in Odorizzi and CF in Cain....but now you got 3 decent prospects for the NLCS experience.

Overall, I think Melvin was wise in both trades.

Your thoughts?

You are joking right, did you see Greinke's ERA in the 2011 Postseason?
Greinke's ERA in the 2011 postseason: vs AZ was 7.20 vs St Louis it was 6.17 .> He did not PUSH us into the LCS.

Alcides Escobar is hitting 300+ with 15 SB and great defense.

Did you do any research before posting this?

I still like the trade and the Brewers' history with Greinke; regardless of the OP's assertions (which I don't have a problem with).

I'm pleased with the trade. They got the Angels #1 prospect and 2 decent pitchers. Both of these guys ERA's are right around 3 which is decent. Greinke did this trade to help bolster the pitching roster next year when he comes back.

How sweet would it be if Greinke gets his ring and then does come back to sign a long term deal with Milwaukee? I never kept track, but I wonder how many players have actually done this. To be traded away and then come back to sign with the team that originally traded them.

Cliff lee recently did this.

Yes, Cliff Lee did do it however under different circumstances. Was traded in the offseason to the Mariners, then the Mariners traded him to the Rangers so he had a full season with two different teams before returning to the original team that traded him. It wasn't a rental trade. It does apply, but I am thinking more along the lines of being traded as a rental and then coming back to the original team.

I love the deal, but then again Segura is a 2B not a SS, which means my favorite Scooter Gennett is blocked. HOpefully they will keep him at SS until Yadiel Rivera is ready. Basically we traded for a 16th rounder and 2 undrafted prospects.

Segura hadnt played a lot of ss until this year...give him a chance to adapt more, he could develop into being average defensively.

Calling segura and pena undrafted is a bit skewed since they're international, and calling proven milb players by round in terms of value is disingenuous because theyve proven what they are, they're new value, since that time.

Geoff Blum did this in 2005. Got traded at the deadline from the Padres to the White Sox, won a World Series ring and then signed with the Padres in the offseason.

I'm always surprised teams give up so much for a rental in any case.

Was I disappointed when the Brewers gave up a GOD to get Sabathia? No, it got them to the playoffs. Playoffs generate revenue. Think about how much money 1 playoff game brings in.

So if you traded for Miguel Sano, you would call him an undrafted player even though he is a top 25 prospect? That is some ignorant XXXX if you ask me. Segura is an excellent prospect, I am guessing you have never seen him play. He has a legitimate shot to be a step above Alcides Escobar, especially with the bat. AND, he is much better then scooter gennet, so get used to that as well.

If I was a Brewers fan, I would appreciate the fact that my GM:

A. was agressive in trading to get Greinke

B. was agressive in trying to sign to him an extension

c. had the vision to trade him before he was a free agent

d. get a top 50 prospect at a position of need in return, along with some strong pitching prospects

All of this.
I couldn't have said it better. Most (not just this thread, but others threads and on other boards) have never even seen Segura swing a bat. He was a top 30 prospect pre-2011 and was playing great before getting hurt. He has come back this year and put together a very solid season. He will probably be the Brewers best SS since Yount. I watched him play the last 2 springs and was very impressed. He could be a Pedroia type hitter and has a strong enough arm to play 3rd. With the hole the Brewers have had at SS for 20 years, Id be pretty pumped about getting a player with his potential, for a player who was leaving anyways. I'll say this, if he stays healthy, he will be a much better player than Alcides, whom I like and a potential all star caliber SS for MIL.

I have read in other threads were people think Greinke won't sign with the angels and may come back to MIL. The fact that they traded him, because they couldn't offer enough to keep him or satisfy him, should be enough to answer that. I'm guessing, there is a better chance the tigers trade Prince back, than there is of Greinke going back. He is going to get paid, I'm guessing, based on the Angels past mistakes and the new GM Dipoto, they would not have made this trade without knowing Greinke was seriously considering staying. I have no clue where Greinke will sign, but socal is a beautiful place to live, with insane weather year round and a vacation destination for most of the world. Just a few years ago the Angels were voted by players as a top org. to play for. If he stays here, he is in a rotation where he doesn't have to be the top dog, just one of four. He will have a chance at the playoffs every year, with their current team. He gets to play with guys like Pujols, Weaver, CJ, Trumbo, and watch Trout become an all time great. He will play in front of one of the top 5 stadiums, in regards to attendance. If the Angels make a competitive offer, I don't know why he would leave. Reading the boards, most didn't think the angels would get him and now he is, for sure not staying and maybe heading back to MIL. In the past, it seams, Greinke didn't want to play for the big market teams. The angels give him an opportunity to play for a team who can afford him, with a small market feel, and in an environment, where all the pressure isn't on him. I'm sure all of this will be pretty tempting and hard to leave, when it comes time to decide on his next contract.

I wish the Brewers and their fans well with this trade. I think they will be very pleased with Segura and his game. They also picked up 2 arms with the potential to be playing this year, if needed and could become #2-3 starters based on their stuff.

I liked the trade with the Angels. Doud Melvin got what was the best offer, so its hard not to. Texas didn't want to give up any of their 2 big prospects, and I'm sure Melvin made it known to them that the Angels were the other team biding for Grienke.
