FCB: What can collectors expect from your high end products? In the past
products like UD exquisite has drawn much praise from the international
basketball card market, and has been regarded as the best product in
basketball cards over the years. Will Panini produce similar game used
patch as we have seen on the market in the past 7 or so years?

LG: We plan on offering a variety of products from high-end cards to products
for the mass retailers. We intend to offer game-worn patch cards, autograph
cards and other special cards.

FCB: Does Topps/UD retain their exclusive contracts with their players (Shaq,
Kobe, Lebron, MJ, KG etc...)? If so, how successful can a product be
without autos and jerseys of all of these players?

LG: Panini cards will still include these elements. We are working with Topps
and Upper Deck on the specifics related to their exclusive player deals.

FCB: Will the autographs be signed directly on the card, or will you use sticker
based autographs?

LG: We expect to use a combination of directly signed card, as well as sticker
autographs.

FCB: What is your stance on redemption cards?

LG: We do not plans to have redemptions in a product, but sometimes due to
player scheduling it is unfortunately unavoidable when trying to procure
autographs.

FCB: Will you use your current company name to market products in the US, or
will you switch to a more US friendly marketing strategy?

LG: Panini will open a U.S. subsidiary in the U.S. Panini is a well-respected
global company and we’re confident that the considerable marketing and
promotional support they are planning to put behind NBA trading cards will
give us the opportunity to cultivate a new generation of fans. Panini has a
proven track record of opening and growing new markets throughout Europe
and Latin America and will apply its successful international growth
strategies in the U.S. to help us grow our domestic trading card business.

Re: Brief Q&A Session with Lisa Goldberg at Panini

If I were Topps or UD, I would either charge them an absurd amount for the rights to use other players or just tell them no.

So they're going to have game-used, autos and special cards, they hope not to have redemptions but probably will, and they'll use stickers. Innovation at its core.

If you are Topps or UD, though, you don't want to get completely hosed on the money you are paying your exclusives. That's why you would reach a reasonable agreement to defray as much of the cost as possible.

Doesn't sound like Panini has put much thought into this. The hobby does not except change very well. They should have talked to Brian from Razor before jumping in.

So will the remaining products that Topps and UD produce be loaded? At least I can still get some nice Speights' cards.

I wish they would have used more than 1 sentence in their answers. The interview did not impress me.

To be fair, they answered exactly what I asked.

Nice work getting something up so soon Chris. However, I was incredibly underwhelmed by their responses. Something longer than one sentence would have been nice. I am completely unfamiliar with their other products, and had never heard of them up until a few hours ago, but it sounds like they have little idea what they're getting in to.

To get further in depth, you have to build up a relationship. This is all I could get for now. I am trying to get a superfractor.com podcast scheduled.

I wasn't impressed with their interview either, however considering I don't collect basketball per se, I will give them a chance. I'm still wanting to land that nice MJ auto on card and maybe a new Kobe low numbered auto on card from exquisite. Those are the next PC wants.

I've never even heard of this company. I'll give them a chance, but wow...I'm just in shock right now.

Nothing against you at all Chris. I think you did a fantastic job to get anything at all with them so quickly. I'm just a bit surprised they were so brief in their answers. Yes, they answered the questions, but I guess I was expecting them to be a bit more on the long winded side, given that they are likely almost entirely unknown to much of the American based hobby.

I am a big fan of knowing all the facts before rushing to judgement. We know very little about the product they will produce. If the product is good, then I am all for it.
