Are the Rams really gonna take Bradford? I just don't see him holding up in the NFL. At all. Curious to hear some thoughts on what might be the #1 pick, Sam Bradford.

Disclaimer: In no way shape or form am I implying that Clausen deserves to be the #1 pick. Most of you guys know, I love my ND players but I also live in the real world.

The Rams have been backed into a corner on this due to monetary commitments, and their own previous drafts. The gigantic salary that #1 overall picks make almost forces you into taking a QB if you have the need to do so. With the Rams drafting defensive line help in 2007 and 2008, they've let their offensive star power deteriorate considerably. It'll be tough as hell to sell tickets in St. Louis if they don't project some sort of future impact on offense outside of Steven Jackson and Donnie Avery.

As for Bradford's injury concerns, they are obviously being looked at closely. However, from what teams have scouted, him being given time to heal the shoulder, as well as bulk up considerably since his last game in October, have calmed those concerns enough. As a result, they've pretty much rated him the #1 QB based on projected upside. His accuracy and arm strength have impressed scouts at the workouts. Alex Smith recently went through the same thing with his shoulder, and he held up in the games he played in 2009. Coming back too soon is what set back both Smith and Bradford in the recent past.

Speaking of Alex Smith, I've wondered if we'll see a parallel scenario to the 2005 NFL Draft. You have a team that is in dire need for a change at QB (Rams now, 49ers in 2005), and while they would love to trade down and maximize value, they seemingly have no takers. In addition, now with Washington getting McNabb for the short term, the other pro-style QB (Rodgers in 05, Clausen now) possibly sliding down the draft boards as a result of the unbalanced needs of teams behind them. If this comes true, we might not see Clausen outside of the preseason for a while.

This touch on anything you mention, Craig? :)
