Can you no longer leave negative feedback for a buyer?

What's the deal with that? I had a non-paying buyer who I was going to leave feedback for but the only option was to leave positive feedback. Seriously? Positive feedback for a NPB! At that time an unpaid item case was still open so I figured after I closed the case I could leave feedback. That doesn't work either cause now it won't let me leave feedback at all for the transaction. This buyer is receiving positive feedbacks for non-payment. Is Ebay really protecting buyers that much?

From what I know this has been there for at least 2-3 years...it's such BS but it is what it is.

yup...summer of 2011 i think....

the theory (claimed by ebay) is that if a seller can leave negative feedback , then many buyers who have a legitmate reason to do so for the seller may be afraid to for fear of the retaliatory negative (i can see their point , but the solution they chose isn't much better) which means bad sellers would not get the bad feedbac they so richly deserve......ebay also insists that as long as buyers do file npb reports and follow through , the effects (non-payng bidder strikes) would be more damaging to bad buyers than actual bad feedback....(im not convinced - but then i've only had 9 or 10 non-paying bidders in 12 years so i may be the wrong person to ask about that)

Still, four years later (I think), a really stupid ideas.

So many no-pays, cancelled transactions, bogus refunds, etc. that can all be blamed on this lousy policy...

The problem is the non-paying-bidder strikes are invisible, hidden, nowhere to be found. It's not transparent. How many npb strikes result in warning or banning? Nobody knows.

the one disagreement i have with this statment : while you can't SEE the number of strikes a buyer has , there is a way to ensure those with multiple strikes can not even attempt to bid/buy from you.....all sellers can set their own buyer requirements....a wonderful little tool .....one of the requirements involves unpaid items cases.....you can block all bids by people with 2 , 3 , 4 , or 5 cases within 1 , 6 , or 12 months....currently i have mine set at 2 cases within 1 month and as mentioned , i have very very few non-paying bidders going back to 2003....also , fwiw , in a handful of cases , i have had a buyer blocked by my buyer requirements (usually the "must have pay pal" or "us delivery only" criteria) who e-mailed me asking if i would edit a particular listing so they could make a purchase and it worked just fine.....

I wish they would make feedback a requirement as well. I always leave feedback as soon as an item is paid for and wish buyers would do the same upon receiving the item. Right now my feedback left for others is at 1,027. My feedback received is at 840. Would be nice to even them out a bit.

I've tried bidding on a few others items where I've been told Im blocked from bidding on that sellers items. What gets me is I've always paid for items I've won. Not once has a NPB been filed against me. These sellers tell me they have no idea what setting to change. My username doesn't show in their blocked list either.
Idea?

since it SEEMS you are in a place that 99.99% of sellers would ship to , i doubt it has to do with the location requirement and since i see you also sell , you obviously have a pay pal account so that's not it and i think the lowest feedback score that can be blocked automatically is either 5 or 10 so again not likely....

that said , there is one filter on the buyer requirements list allows sellers to block bidders from bidding on a certian number of their items (if that option is checked , by default i think it sets the limit at 5 items)....personally i never have used that filter because i WANT people to buy multiple items....that said , i see how it could save a headache for a seller if an unscrupulous bidder came along and bought or bid on tons of items (with no intention of paying OR with the intent of winning and filing a bogus claim/posting inaccurate negative feedback) just to mess with the seller....

unless the seller is not being honest with you about being on his blocked bidder list , i can only think of one other thing : there is another filter that may trip up some people - have you ever had a policy violation (either as a buyer OR seller) ?

I think any NPB strikes should show next to the User Name in a bidding list. That'll be a good deterrent.

Never had a policy violation either. These are sellers I've never bought from either so doubt I'm on their blocked list and if so, not really sure why. I'm an honest guy. Always pay for items. Always honest selling as well.
The sellers loss IMO.

On the Buyer Requirements page, select your buyer requirements. For example, you might not want to do business with buyers who:

  • Don't have a PayPal account

  • Have unpaid items recorded on their account

  • Are registered in countries you don't ship to

  • Have reportedly violated eBay policies

  • Have a negative Feedback score

  • Are currently winning or have bought a large number of your items in the last 10 days
