i've been a knick fan for as long as i can remember
my favorite time was when we had ewing, oakley, starks, mark jackson, etc which was about 10 years ago
since that time, draft and draft, i see almost all the rest of the nba teams pick a player that i wish the knicks could have gotten....
i just want to go over the last few years and see what could have been.... ::facepalm::
2009 - jordan hill - 8th pick - i do not know much about hill to make a grade on this pick with the 8th pick. coveted james harden and although knicks don't have anyone to package, i was miraculously hoping that they'd trade up to get him. from what i've read, he's raw and could turn out to be a good player. at 6-10, 235 lbs, he's got great size but again, i haven't seen him in action yet so this is to be determined
grade = incomplete
2008 - danilo gallinari - 6th pick - i cried a little when i was watching this.....i 100% expected the commish to say "and the new york knicks with the 6th pick select....eric gordon!". of course, this being the knicks, we select gallinari.....aside from derrick rose, i wanted russell westbrook and eric gordon in that order. we had a sure thing with gordon and we simply blew this selection by taking gallo over gordon. gallo so far looks more like a small forward who will chuck 3's this year.....gordon? i see him increasing his ppg avg to about 17-18 this year and improve his boards and assists. i'd have been happy with brook lopez as well here
grade = d
2007 - wilson chandler - 9th pick went to the bulls, we got back 23rd pick (i forgot why we swapped with the bulls here. was it the curry deal?) - another top 10 pick but gave it up to the bulls. we did get wilson chandler with the 23rd pick. i didn't know much about him either but so far, i really like his smooth game. aside from rudy fernandez, i thought it was a great late round pick. knicks love their euro players and i wouldn't have minded it they selected rudy fernandez who went 24th.
grade = b-
2006 - renoldo balkman - 2nd pick went to the bulls, we got 20th from denver (i know this was for the curry deal, right?) - this was a weird draft and looking back, how did brandon roy drop to the 6th? in a perfect world, had we kept the 2nd pick and selected brandon roy, we'd so far been set in the sg department. of course, knowing the knicks though, had we kept that pick, we'd have selected adam morrison. lol!! as for the 20th pick, balkman.....i liked him, personally but all analysis had him going late 2nd or even not being drafted at all. of course, with the next pick, rajon rondo gets selected. im still not sure on rondo as he's benefited so much from his surroundings with pierce, allen and kg but whether he could have performed well or not with the knicks, we will never know
grade = f
2005 - channing frye, nate robinson and david lee - 8th, 21st (from suns), 30th picks - bad drafting everywhere from the top 10 picks. lol! deron's good but im sure the jazz would now prefer cp3 over deron. channing frye? channing "facking" frye??? granger and bynum in that order....nuff said. consolation prize was david lee with the 30th pick. he's been the brightest star so far for the knicks. i think he's a great player and exactly what the knicks need. a non primadonna who hustles, rebounds and works hard. he's improved every year since 05 and was an absolute steal in that draft. nate robinson was a decent pick too but he's a role player at best. if we wanted a small ass shooting guard, i'd have taken a flyer with monta ellis. of course, we chose wrong on that one
grade = c+ only because of david lee. otherwise, f-
2004 - trevor ariza - 16th pick (traded away) and 2nd round - no 1st round pick and i dont recall why we traded the 1st round pick for whom but this was a weak draft overall which didn't bug me much. we selected trevor ariza with our 2nd round pick. of course he becomes a great role player defensively after he leaves the knicks.....a player like that is exactly what the knicks need and didn't have the patience to bring him up that way. numberwise, not so great but it's not always about the numbers in this league
grade = b- only because ariza was traded prematurely before given the chance
2003 -vmichael "fat bastard" sweetney - 9th pick - lebron, carmelo, wade and bosh. eh, no matter who we took with the 9th pick, it would've been a bad pick regardless. 6 years later, we did obtain the 2nd overall pick in darko. lol!! knicks were just good enough to fall out of the top 5 pick that year......they've been mediocre and they can't even lose enough games to get the top 5.
grade = f - rest of the picks from 10th t0 29th all suck. only remember josh howard being the good one. maybe david west as well.
2002 - nene - 7th pick - traded to denver. amare and prince were picked after this pick and of course, we didn't even keep nene. do you remember what we got back for this pick to the nuggets?
grade - f - stuck with the 7th pick, choose amare and this could've been a turning point for the knicks with their coveted big man with lots of upside. suns win. pistons win with prince. knicks fail.
ok, enough rant. with the upcoming season, i always get excited during bball season but realistically, hope they lose enough to get a top 3 pick next year. we ain't getting nobody like lebron or wade. bosh, maaaaaaybe....
had the stars aligned all correctly for the knicks, this would've been our lineup below
guards - eric gordon and brandon roy
forwards - lee and granger/bynum
center - amare
of course, this is all just coulda, shoulda, woulda and all teams have their versions from their respective draft picks/busts but we did one, ONE thing right, david lee, in the last 8 years
