I went to a stopped by a local card show this weekend hoping to pick up some commons to get signed at Piratefest. I ended up pretty disappointed on that regard, as all the guys that usually have a decent array of commons weren't there, and there were only maybe 7 or so deadlers total. However, I think my other pickups more than make up for it. I was able to pick up some nice Pirates vintage and numbered inserts. For the two biggies I picked up, scroll to the end of the post.

I found the Santana in a $1 box. I don't follow non-Pirate prospects too closely, but I know Santana is pretty highly regarded. Plus, I love the Razor Metal cards, and at that price it was too good to pass up. I've been looking to pick up a Maz RC to get signed at Piratefest for about a month now, getting barely outbid on ebay more than once. This one isn't in great condition, but I was able to get it for significantly lower than they go for on ebay.

Last, but certainly not least, my first Crusade. I wish it was a Pirate, but I can certainly see why people love these! I'll probably hold on to it for the time being, but I'd be willing to listen to offers on the Santana and Crusade should anyone be interested.

The best part? I spent a total of $24 at the show.

Nice pickups. Was the show in Pittsburgh somewhere? I've been looking for any shows to go to around here.

The show was at Monroeville Mall. There is another show toward the end of the month at Westmoreland Mall. There is usually a show at least every couple months in the area, usually at malls. There is also a regular (monthly?) firehall show in the area, though I've never been to it. Where in the area are you?

Dude.

Brian Bixler has a beautiful autograph.

Too bad he sucks. :(

He has actually simplified his auto a bit lately. On earlier autographs, you could actually make out some letters after each of the B's. He probably will never be more than a AAAA type player, but I still have some hope he could make it as a SS/2B/OF utility type if he can cut down on the strikeouts.

I'm in Belle Vernon, about 20 miles south of Pittsburgh. Used to go to Westmoreland/Monroeville/Century III shows all the time. Don't ever see them advertised anymore, I didn't even know they still had them. I used to go to the Castle Shannon firehall show, if that's the one you're referring to.

Yeah, Castle Shannon was the one I was thinking of. Overall, shows in the area are horribly promoted, in my opinion. The Westmoreland show is the 22-24th this month, but I think it's usually the weakest of the shows in the area. I know a couple of the larger dealers just don't feel like making the drive that far outside the city to set up at a show.

There's also a show at the Monroeville convention center right outside the mall next month, though the $10 admission fee is a bit high for my taste.

I'll definitely head to the W'moreland show then. It's been about 2 years since I've been to a show.

Nice pickups. Is the next Monroeville show in conjunction with a toy/comic show (one on each side of the convention center)?

I haven't really figured that out yet, and from the people I've asked, it doesn't seem that anyone has a clear idea on what they're doing. In past years, I recall the large card show coming a week or two prior to the comic/toy show. However, I don't know if this will be two separate shows, or just one show that they're also promoting as a card show.
