Robert Stock had more hype than Bryce Harper.

I remember hearing about him when he was 13 in BA.

He could be a steal for the Cards

No SI cover, though. ;)

It'll be interesting to see if he sticks at catcher or not.

Now, they need to work on Miller.

No he didn't.

He had solid hype, but it was 90% from BA themselves. He was never in the position that Harper is in, ever.

Bryce Harper has hype from EVERY media outlet imaginable (TMZ next?).

I picked up a few of these last year after I saw him in the Cape League. He had a rough year last year.

Now... what will they do with him. His arm is more valuable than his bat, but he doesn't want to pitch and was drafted as a catcher because that is the only way he would sign. It will be interesting to see which way he goes over the next couple years.

Knowing them, they could make him a 2B or OF and hope for the best on the bat.

I can't see him getting a serious shot at catcher, but you never know. Another less demanding position can always come later on if he fails.

Heck, maybe he could take the Jason Motte route, starting at catcher and then finally realize pitching will get him further.

With Molina the present and Anderson the future behind the plate, I'd put him on the mound.

I wouldn't call the young arms in their system overwhelming, talentwise.

JP...I actually made that short post to see if you would say anything along those lines. You did, as you should have.

Obviously he felt that the money wasn't going to get better next year, and it's just amazing for them to know what was left on the table had he not forgone his senior year in high school and entered USC. Realistically, I see him having success in professional baseball...I'm just not sold where he will end up.

He is a better pitching prospect than hitting, but he is an easier sign as a catcher.

To me this early signing just means that he is ready to prove he can hit...as soon as possible.

Yadier is the present and the future. He's only 26.

Bryan Anderson has been trade bait for 3+ years.

If I had to guess, they'll continue the trend of signing a veteran backup.

I'd really like it if Stock hit well, but I don't see a future for him at catcher.

Anybody have a scouting report on him as a pitcher?

Stock is one of the draft's most intriguing players due to his background. He was Baseball America's Youth Player of the Year in 2005 when he was 15, and a year later, Stock skipped his senior year in high school to enroll at Southern California. He's a 19-year-old draft-eligible junior, and his college career has been one of valleys and recent peaks. He was the Trojans' starting catcher and sometime closer his first two seasons, showing modest power, a good fastball and good catch-and-throw skills. He showed raw power and catch-and-throw tools in his first two seasons, particularly arm strength. However, his draft stock suffered; after ranking No. 5 in our Cape Cod League Top 30 following his freshman season, he didn't even make the top 30 last summer, and scouts were stunned by his poor performance on scout day in fall 2008, when his bat looked slow and his pop times sluggish. When Stock got off to a slow start offensively in 2009, attention shifted to his performance on the mound. The Trojans turned to Stock as a starter this year, and he has delivered. He made his first start March 29 and beat Arizona State, striking out 10 in five innings, and hasn't looked back, registering a complete-game win at Arizona and showing surprising polish. His delivery is fairly easy, giving him good control of an 88-92 mph fastball that can hit 95 and a surprisingly good changeup that some scouts consider a plus pitch. His low-80s breaking ball also grades out as average, and Stock now figures to go out in the first three rounds as a pitcher—if he proves signable.

That's why I love you (no ****).

Much better than I thought, although he should have signed out of HS.

He's going to catch at Johnson City for this year, then the team will reevaluate him in the offseason. They like him as a pitcher, but he wants to catch, so they'll give him a shot.
