Rays fans simply do not support that team and I am one of them. So they are not getting what they haven't paid for. Excellent move by the Sox. Carl will tear up Yankee catching.

I think the length of the contract is too long - it seems to be set up by the Werth deal, which is also too long - I hope Carl does well for the next 7 years for the Red Sox sake

I hope for Boston's sake I'm wrong, but Crawford to me is a guy who seems like the kinda guy who will take the huge money and not be the same type of player after a big contract comes thru.

So what does the projected lineup look like now? Red Sox have an awful lot of LH hitters in their lineup

2B - Pedroia
LF - Crawford
1B - Gonzo
3B - Youkilis
DH - Ortiz
RF - Drew
SS - Scutaro
C - Salty/Varitek/FA signing/Trade
CF - Ellsbury

Something like that? I love how the lineup goes from filet mignon to a McRib by the end.

This is the one day in the last two weeks I went with the iPod instead of sports radio on the way into work, so imagine my surprise when a colleague tells me on the way in. I had completely written this off.

I do have a little of the same concern you do, gt, but I think the rest of the clubhouse will keep him in check (at least for a couple of seasons).

And, no prospects to get him, which means they can STILL go get Upton. Please, Theo...ride the momentum.

Crawford is a grinder who takes his profession seriously. It's well known in Tampa that he has put in a lot of hard work to become a great player, particularly defensively. He also wants to win. I don't see him taking it easy now that he has cashed in.

anybody think Russ Martin lands in Boston now? They need a catcher bad.

Maine of course......
....Sox fortunes still rest on Lackey and Beckett. Pitch like they did in '10 and they'll again be on the outside looking in. Pitch like we've seen in prior years and this team could be looking at 100 wins.

can't see how he would add anything over what they already have.. he's washed up already too

they need some right handed bats badly now.. Yanks sign Cliff Lee and they will have two premier leftys to throw at the Sox. and I agree about the suspect starting pitching.. I was really hoping to see them make a push for a good starter just to solidify the rocky rotation they had last season.

Lester did have 19 winds last year, even with a bad start. Clay won 17 so with those 2 and Lackey and Beckett their starting pitching is looking pretty good.

....it only looks good if Lackey and Beckett "step-up" like Lester and Clay did in '10.

To me watching Lackey pitch was like watching DiceK pitch.. if they didn't have an early blow up you waited for them to have it.. and by the 5th inning you could almost predict it if they didn't goto the bullpen.. Lester and Clay can't do it all.. and who's to say they both repeat last years performance? Red Sox made a huge mistake last year going for Lackey and not going after Lee or Halladay much harder.

If Ellsbury stays healthy and Lackey and Beckett pitch well this team will be amazing.

Boston has no excuse not to win the World Series this year after their off-season moves. Great job by their management to get these guys to the Red Sox.

As a Tiger fan, damn. Glad to add VMart and Benoit will surely be helpful, but they really needed to add one of the big name guys to contend this year and they did not get the job done. Of course the offseason is not over yet, but the obvious signings did not happen for Detroit.

Poor Longoria, he will have even less protection and see less hittable pitches than before.
