Carlos Delgado - 1996-2008 Nice Run. 454 HR's. HOF'er????

Was lookin at Carlos Delgado's career. From 96-2008 he had a very nice consistent stretch of production. If he sticks around and hit's 500 HR's do you think he had a chance at the HOF??? He has a much more consistent career then Gary Sheffield. Thoughts???

Might as well, they already lowered the bar by letting guys like Ozzie Smith, Sandberg, Dawson, Perez, Gossage, Sutter, and countless others over the past ten years in! Let everyone that had a decent career in, unless they did those evil steriods!

If this were a world where stats was the end all be all to the Hall of Fame, I would say he has a shot if he plays a couple more years. However, understanding the Hall of Fame is 1 part stats, 1 part stature in the sport, and 1 part achievment, I think he has a 'slim to none' chance because he achieved very little and was just not that popular. I do not think he was ever 'great' or a 'face of the game' player, but just a modern above average masher.

Now, if only he had the popularity to be a face of the game type like Ozzie Smith or Ryno then he would be a lock, but he just never recieved that type of reverence. Perhaps rightfully so, as both Smith and Ryno were 'once a generation' type player/talent/leader/personalities.

Agreed. I never considered Delgado a "feared" hitter, especially in a league with Frank Thomas, Ken Griffey Jr., Manny Ramirez, Juan Gonzalez, etc.

It says something about a player when he puts up the following seasons:

2001 - .279-39-102
2002 - .277-32-109

and receives ZERO MVP votes.

Stats are not everything nor should they be everything when considering a HOFer...and there wasn't much to Delgado other than good stats. He never was looked at as a Leader on a team.

He'll sit on the ballot for a while if he gets to 500 Doubles, 500 HR's and with his 1500 RBI's, but I really doubt he'll ever get in.

Lets compare him to Dawson, who in my opinion shouldn't have gotten the nod but since the ballot wasn't too strong he slipped in.

Other than the higher S/O's and triples, Delgado has some better numbers in 4 fewer seasons. Well and should he stay healthy his hits, doubles, runs and RBI's should eclipse Dawson's. So why not let him in, heck even McGriff had better numbers than Dawson.

I say yes. He will most likely end up with 500 HRs, 1,500 RBIs, 1,300 runs, 500 2Bs, 1,000 walks with a .383 career OBP. More hits would have been nice, but the guy did get on base. He was never a league leader type of guy, but he was always dominant. Imagine how much better he would have looked if all the other guys were not juicing. If he had PED links, no way, but if he comes up clean, most likely.

Actually he was looked at as a leader for the Jays. You would have had to be here in Toronto to know that though.
The guy has averaged 120 RBI per season over his career and his .280 average is certainly respectable for a major power hitter.
And he probably should have won the MVP in 2003. Take a look at the stats:

If he can put together a couple of decent seasons of 25 HR I dont see how you can keep him out.

I remember when Delgado came up for the Blue Jays as a catcher and hit all those home runs in the beginning of the season. His 92 Bowmans were on fire. It's nice to see he has had a decent career and I think that if he can reach 500 Home Runs, he may have a chance to be a HOFer

Yeah when he hit those shots off the Skydome restaurant, it was right around the time 1992 Bowman was being outed as extremely deep and SP'd (relatively speaking). It was like when Vince Carter's SPA was the hottest item on the planet. Of course, his Bowman card topped out at $40 or so, IIRC, but people were ravenous.
