Just looking over his statistics. 30th all time for home runs with 473.

From Baseball reference

Black Ink Batting - 8 (277), Average HOFer ? 27
Gray Ink Batting - 124 (149), Average HOFer ? 144
Hall of Fame Monitor Batting - 110 (134), Likely HOFer ? 100
Hall of Fame Standards Batting - 44 (117), Average HOFer ? 50

So the question is

"Do you think he has any chance of being elected to the Hall Of Fame?"

I say yes. Delgado's reputation took a hit with the whole War on Terror incident, but I have always respected the man for standing up for his beliefs, whether I agree with him or not. I also feel that he is a true student of the game and the consummate professional athlete - the man does his research, and I feel that he truly loves the game and it is more than a paycheck for him. He doesn't get much love in the hobby, but I think he is one of the great characters of his generation and I hope he is remembered as such.

No. The Hall of Fame is not the Hall of Having a Lot of HR or the Hall of Stats.

He absolutely must have a major milestone to even have a chance. 500+ HRs could get him in. He was one of the most productive hitters during his career-span and never had any ties or links to PEDs. 500+ HRs with 1,500+ RBIs could get him in.

I was looking at past ASG and forgot he had the honor of batting 3rd in the era where everyone hit tons of longballs, so thats pretty prestigious IMO..

this is the problem with letting roody-poos in. hes a lot better than some other guys, but not as elite as Id like to see.

but for todays standards yes hes a HOF

Has he officially retired? If not (or even if he has, no one has to stay retired forever), he'd look mighty good in an Angels uniform right about now.

For me he has to get to 500 Hr and then I think he will get in. Obviously he will not be first ballot like all prevoius 500 club members in the past but he will get in. I like Delgado and hope he gets to the 500 homerun mark.

after looking at his stats, I would put Edgar in before him.

You know, that's a very interesting comparison. Yes, I know many look at the DH thing as a knock against Edgar, but many also look at the 2247 hits as "not enough." Delgado by comparison only has 2038 career hits.

Edgar has a better career BA, OBP and OPS, more 2B, more BB, less K
Delgado has more HR and RBIs, better SLG

Both are very comparable players, fairly clutch players, one more of a power hitter, one more of a contact hitter.

The HR and 2B numbers are impressive for Delgado, but not getting 500 of either, and the lack of hits, I think hurts his chances, just like the lack of hits hurts Edgar.

Maybe a better comparison is Frank Thomas, and honestly, I think Frank makes Delgado look like a "good" player, not a HOFer.

At the end of the day, Carlos gets consideration, but doesn't get in.
