After we chose to rank Jesus Montero ahead of Carlos Santana on our top 15 catching prospect list, I received a lot of good Montero vs. Santana questions. Evan Brunell succinctly asked what most people were thinking: Is Montero's offensive upside that significant to rank him ahead of Santana, who will stick at catcher?

Will Santana be the better all-around big leaguer in 2010? Probably. 2011? Maybe. 2012 and beyond? I don't think so.

Check the link, Adam offers a good break down from first hand evaluation of these two prospects.

I see Jesus Montero as a potential once-in-a-generation force on offense. And to me that gives Montero the edge over Carlos Santana, even though Santana will likely have more defensive value than him.

OMG!!!

What is the world coming to. A discussion of catching prospects and no mention what so ever of the all mighty prospect that just got his GED.... if you ask me... it makes that article just plain idiotic.

You better recognize!

Who's fantasy stock do people think will be better?

montero, no doubt in my mind about it

Where would Montero fit in the Yanks at?

Potentially he could go to Toronto if they really make an attempt for Halladay, but, for now, I dont see him fitting into a starting job in NY for a while, barring an injury because you've got A-Rod at 3rd, Tex at 1st, Cano at 2nd, and Jeter at SS.

Unless he moves to outfield, or they decide to bench Posada, I dont see him playing any time soon.

For Santana, he could get the starting job out of ST

(although I believe Marson will)

I grew up in the Cleveland area and for some reason all the hype around Santana reminds me of another Cleveland catching prospect:

Mike Piazza shouldn't have been a catcher either, but because he could BARELY pull it off, his amazing Offensive talent allowed teams to get by with him back there.

The Riverlands.
I think that Yankees will end up trading Montero, but he has a better offensive ability than Santana. Both of them are complete studs.

Why doesn't Austin Romine get any attention?

IMO Montero can't catch, or throw runners out. He was terrible behind the plate in the 4-6 games I saw him catch.

Once in a generation is outrageous hyperbole for any baseball player.

I was going to say the same thing, I get a kick out of it when people describe a prospect as a once in a generation player.

There's a significant chance that Romine will never be a starter in the majors, honestly he reminds me a lot of Jeff Mathis. Remember A-Rod(35), Jeter(36), and Tex(30) are starting to get old. Montero is going to be a force.
