Very tough call this year between Harper and Rendon.

Thanks for the laugh.

I hate to say it because a bunch of guys are very much worthy, but it's going to get renamed to "Golden Harper Award" in 2010.

Vote for Duffy! Better #'s than Rendon or Harper, in a real baseball conference. Well, Rendon's in the same conference.

Actually being serious. Harper's numbers are slightly better, but with Rendon doing it against much better competition, I do actually think it will be very close.

Oh, I know you're being serious. I like Rendon alot, but I can't see Harper not winning this award.

His season is just unreal.

Interesting that Trevor Bauer got nominated, yet Gerrit Cole didn't, with arguably the same numbers, at the same age, on the same team.

If you want to go on tools, Cole should have had a much better year. He fell off at the end and Bauer ended fairly strong.

Just helping put it in perspective a little for people who do not know the stats off-hand:

Harper: 62 G .442 AVG 22 DOUBLES 4 TRIPLES 29 HR 89 RBI .986 SLG% 35 BB 39 K 18 SB

Rendon: 59 G .393 AVG 12 DOUBLES 1 TRIPLE 23 HR 78 RBI .787 SLG% 62 BB 21 K 14 SB

and then the level of competition needs to be factored in.

EDIT: and thanks to JP for the update Harper now has 31 homers and 97 RBI's which also will most likely raise his BA/SLG%

Lets just say my above stats are as of MAY 31st ;)

To the poster above me - Harper now has 31 HR, 97 RBI, thanks to last night's slugfest.

And it'll be the biggest upset imaginable if it doesn't run away with it.

Harper has the stats to win it, and the hype to win it. I still had to vote for Rendon though. :P

I like knowing Rendon could be an Oriole in 2012.

You do realize he's draft eligible next year, right?

That's what I meant. i figured if he gets drafted #1 overall next year by the O's (assuming the O's continue their woeful season), he'll probably spend the next year negotiating his contract and won't make his debut until 2012.

Dude, the signing deadline is mid-August each year. If he doesn't debut until 2012, it won't be due to contract negotiations.

i realize that, but when did Mychel Givens and Stephen Strasburg make their minor league debuts? I know there are others but those were the two quickest that came to my head.

If he plays in 2011 great! I was just trying to explain why I typed that, and I know he's draft eligible next year, and I look forward to seeing if the O's take him or not.

When the year started, Gerrit Cole was the early favorite for 1.1 in 2011. While he's definitely still in the top 10, he's definitely not 1.1 right now. But he's got a whole 'nother year to pick it up...
As for Harper v. Rendon, I don't think there's any way Harper loses out here. He's got the stats with a wood bat even if it was against inferior competition. Once he got a metal bat in his hands he hit, what, 8 HR's in about that many games? I think he would have excelled in a Division I power conference... think a more well rounded Austin Maddox. And he's got the hype-blitz going on as well, so he's definitely the "darling" of the media...
