Catching Hell: Bartman should get an Allen & Ginter card

I am in the midst of a move but will find the pictures one of these days. I did find the complete Cub playoff run on tape. For those of you who are not familiar with the series Sammy Sosa hit a HR in the bottom of the 9th that sent Game 1 to extras. I have never heard a crowd as loud as Wrigley got after the HR. I still get chills when I watch the replay. Not only did you have the reaction of those inside Wrigley you had thousands outside the park. In addition to the sound I remember how it felt like the upper deck was shaking.

It has been a few years since my wife and I went to Wrigley but we thoroughly enjoyed all of our trips. So much history to take in. Great atmosphere in the Wrigleyville area as well.

Thought the movie was well made. I was getting confused when the first part was all about Buckner but then it transitioned over to Bartman nicely.

It's an awful story at the core, but it's stuff like this that helps make sports (and especially baseball) what it is.

Was an interesting documentary. Seems like Alou caused the whole problem, if he doesnt react like he did, than no one would have given bartman crap. The program had a diverse set of people being interviewed also, a fan that gave him crap, a fan who was filming during the game, a fan that was next to him and almost WAS him if he had touched the ball, the security guard that got him out of the stadium. If that ball is never hit than Gonzo is the new buckner..

I liked the quote by mike lowell also, when he said to his teammates after the fan interfered "lets make this guy famous"

I also couldnt believe all the icons who expressed their anger towards him on national TV which obviously didnt help his situation

I was hoping for Bartman to appear on the doc.

One of the things that interested me is that we never told anything about the three other people that attended the game with him. Its like they abandoned him after the play. He's getting hit with hotdogs and beer cups. That just baffles me.

I've said this since it happened......if Moises Alou doesn't start acting like a 5 year old girl who just had her lollipop stolen, then the crowd wouldn't have turned so violent toward Bartman. But Alou's tantrum escalated it all to what it became I believe.

Still the best part of the deal is how Bartman has handled it. The mystery of him and not talking or telling his story makes it still so interesting today. He is the real genious of the entire ordeal. He has had chance to cash in big and hasn't. For all crap he has gotten from Cubs fan, that takes a lot. He could cash in big with a book, movie rights, paid exclusive interview ect... I'm sure Topps, Panini, Leaf have all tried to get him to sign stuff. A Bartman F U Cubs fans signed card would be huge.

poor guy has never recovered. seems like he still lives at home with his folks and he's well into his mid 30's now.

like someone said in the film - if he wasn't dressed like he was with the headphones and green mock turtleneck it wouldn't have been as bad either.

nobody feels worse than him i'm sure

The people still giving Bartman **** are not Cubs fan, they are meatball, bandwagon idiots.

Steve is still a huge Cubs fan and was a big Ron Santo fan.
People have sent him gifts, etc...and he donates it all to JDRF.

I still maintain that if he had given a few interviews then, nobody would be bothering him now.

Just curious...how do you know all this? Are there local news articles on him? I'd love to send him something. I really respect and admire how he handled everything.

Did any Cubs players at the time come out and say we are to blame for the loss? Sure didn't seem Dusty was wanting to take any heat. What a joke he was in all of this. Where are all the toothpick fans now?

Dusty had been a target for most of 2003 due to pitch counts and use of the bullpen. It was easy to overlook from a media standpoint in that they were winning games.

So much went wrong in the 8th inning. Moises was wrong in the way he acted. FOX really hung Steve out to dry. Prior freaked, Gonzo booted an easy play. Dusty stayed in the dugout. Nobody ever made an attempt to restore order and calm things down.

Of course somewhere in this you have to credit the Marlins. They were down 3-2 in the series returning to Chicago having to face Mark Prior and Kerry Wood. Nobody gave them a chance at coming back.

No, they were not bandwagonners. They were die hard lifelong Cubs fans.

You're correct about them being idiots, though. If you want to murder a fan because of a GAME, you are a raging psychopath. You need to be institutionalized.

All teams have lunatic ******* fans. They're the reason entire fanbases get horrible reputations.

Except for us Marlins fans. We're good (mainly because the Marlins have no fans)

The best part of the documentary was when they showed the video of the foul ball in the 6th inning that went completely into the stands, and up in the far right corner you see Bartman leaning over the railing and waiving his hands trying to get on TV. (strangely he was the only person doing this)

They said it best, be careful what you wish for.

100 years of frustration and the heat of the moment will do that to a person. Would the guy say it now?

WOW!

No question those fans going crazy at Bartman were hardcore die hard Cub fans. They wern't the pink hat fans that show up to be seen. Those fans could care less who wins or even know the score of a game.

The one thing that seems to get overlooked IMO is how Prior was never really the same afterward either.

Here he was, their best pitcher, a CY Young canidate, who pitched a TON more innings than ever before, and boom! a couple of months into '04, he goes down, comes back briefly and is pretty much done. Most blame Baker I know...

And I know it's not directly linked to Bartman, or his play, but another sad part of how it all turned out.
