Can someone explain to me how the lottery works?
I understand they take the 14 teams that don't make the playoffs and the team with the worst record has the best shot at the #1 pick.
So they take 4 balls out of the 14 and that's how they determine the top 4 picks? And the order doesn't matter. So if they draft 4-3-2-1, it is the same and picking 1-2-3-4.
How is it possible for the 14th seed to ever get the #1 pick then?
I'm so confused. Once the Pistons were announced where they were drafting they said the Cavs were guaranteed a top 3 pick and I have no idea why.

I don't know if it was rigged or not, but I called the Cavs at the start, as well as Utah getting in thereand proceeded to call out the Top 3 before they were revealed. And my predictions were based on "how would this go if it was rigged". :lol:
I guess the only bad thing for Cleveland is that this doesn't seem to be the strongest draft. I'm not sure that even at #1 you're going to get that Lebron, Rose, Durant type franchise talent. I guess part of that is simply because I'm not sold that Irving will be a superstar.....Personally I'd probably lean toward Williams. Then I'd probably come back at #4 and snatch up Kemba Walker. I'd take that combo over Irving and whomever else.....it will be interesting to see what they do.

The reason they knew the Cavs were in the top 3 is because there was a break in the slotting, which means they must have moved up.
I missed the explanation this year, but I'm pretty sure in the past it was based on number or color combinations or something like that. They took the total number of combinations they could draw and then each team was given the appropriate percentage that would indicate they got the pick.
In the case of #14 I think it's something under a 1% chance. So if there are 1,000 possible combinations the #14 team may have like 8 combinations out of 1,000 that would give them the pick.
(Not sure if any of that made sense lol and if I'm not remembering the process correctly someone can feel free to correct me)
When the Bulls got Rose they were one of the teams with the lowest odds.....so that's an even more recent example of things working out in a questionable manner.

this is pretty big for me. im adopting which ever team drafts FUTURE SUPERSTAR kyrie irving as my nba team (i havent really had one for the past few years since iverson first left philly - casually rooting for the hawks and celtics).
im really hoping its the cavs cause i hate lebron and they could also pick up someone good at #4. very exciting. would be cool if they grabbed nolan or kyle in the second round, too, but i doubt that plays out.

typically rigged drafts result in borderline playoff teams or large market teams getting players they dont deserve.
im not saying i disagree it was rigged (theres good reason for stern to help out scorned gilbert) but it doesnt fit the typical mold.
id rather this team be the beneficiary of a rigged lottery than a large market or borderline playoff team.

I've never understood and will continue to never understand why the lottery is done behind closed doors and just the results are shown to TV viewers. Why not do the whole thing on TV so you can eliminate the conspiracy theories and claims of it being rigged? Or just do away with the whole lottery system and have a strict order based on record like every single other pro sport.

The no 1 pick is from the Clippers pick from the baron davis trade,just think if the cavs dontmake that trade.The clippers have the no 1 pick.

If I was the T-Wolves I don't think I'd even send a representative to the Lottery next year. Seems like they always get screwed.
Not sure how many times they had the worst record, but they never get the #1......and seems more than a few times they've been bumped from the Top 3.

The Knicks winning in 1985 could have been rigged easily with either the cold envelope or the theory that the envelope was banged to dent it and make it distinguishable. It's fun to discuss but it seems once you make up your mind one way or the other, it doesn't matter what someone else says to change your mind. The current system is observed by many people including team reps and a few reporters so that would be hard to fix since everyone knows the numbers assigned to each time before the drawing. The Cavaliers #1 pick was from the LAST combination they got out of 28 in the Davis trade and they were just one # off (something like 5971 instead of 5972) to get #2. Now if that had happened, well, let's just say some people's heads would explode with conspiracy theories.
