Rumor out of Seattle is that Drew Smyly might be the ptbnl.

That makes sense. Or maybe Chance Ruffin. Fits the scenario Mike Snow from ussmariner laid out,

"The PTBNL is supposed to be a “significant” player, and you can look and see that the Tigers’ top three picks from last year’s draft signed at the deadline and are not eligible to be traded until mid-August, so amateur sleuthing kind of hints in that direction. A supplemental or 2nd-round pick would be decent value, but it also means we’re talking about a straight-to-the-bullpen arm or somebody who’s still in A-ball."

Sweet!

"Source says PTBNL in the #Mariners #Tigers trade is indeed one Detroit's top 3 picks from 2010 draft. Can't be traded until signed for 1 yr"

It's either Castellanos, Ruffin or Smyly. Can't imagine it could be Castellanos as they gave up Martinez, but I'd be happy with any of the 3.

I'm thinking it's Ruffin.

I think Detroit gave up some pretty good talent but I like the deal. The Tigers are taking the "let's win now" attitude and went after one of the big pieces they needed to compete down the stretch and in the playoffs. I think this will help them win the division.

They definitely gave up some talent, but the way I see it, none of the players are irreplaceable; and none of them were guys I saw as future fixtures in Detroit's lineup either. You have to give good players to get good players, and I think Detroit went with the players that will help them win now.

I agree as well. Sometimes you have guys that could play, but don't fit at the moment. When making trades with MiLB players involved you never really know who got the better end until years latter. Teams trading away young talent realize they are taking a risk they might develop into something better down the road, however, they aren't going to help you win now.

That said, I can't see this trade being great or disastrous for either team. It's a pretty safe deal for both.

I dont see how the Tigers got killed here at all. Those Tigers players are marginal at best

Wells is solid. I expect him to start everyday in Seattle. Martinez is young with pop in his bat.

I just don't envision Fister being anything better than a .500 pitcher.
He will be much better on a team that provides him with more than 1.5 runs a game...

I think your last line sums it up perfectly.

I don't really see this deal being a huge plus or minus for either team. And as for the PTBNL, I really hope its Ruffin.
