Padres got smoked on this deal

Headley was struggling the Padres see Rafael Depaula as a closer to set-up guy.
And solarte needs so time and should play second instead of any other position.

I would bet that if Joey Cora was cloned 100 times, the Padres would sign all 100 of them. They can't acquire a hitting prospect worth a damn. Pitching wise, they do well, but hitters, even tradeable prospects, don't want anything to do with the Padres.

They got a AAAA player in Solarte and a 23 year old reliever in High A who's not exactly lighting the world on fire. I just don't understand how you can trade your last big trade chip for these 2 guys.

Yankees win the trade, but the Padres get to dump salary and it's not like San Diego is going anywhere this year.

Great trade. Solarte is garbage once the league figured him out. De Paula only has one plus pitch and isn't projected to be much more than a bullpen arm. Thank god we don't have to see Johnson at third anymore. I wish we could trade for a backup first basemen as well since Johnson is awful there as well

So let me ask you this.
Do you think the Cubs got a good deal on the Jeff Samardzija/ Jason Hammels deal?

I think the Cubs did not get enough, for how well Hammels and Samardzija-> (but no run support by his anemic team) were pitching this season. Hammels is a rental for the A's Free agent next season, and maybe Jeff too, since they don't like to pay out big money to anyone. But I see him staying there and Hammels going. So the cubs traded away there only 2 big chips just like San Diego did with there last one as you put it. This maybe be best for both parties involved

Honestly I am happy with what the Cubs got for Samardzija and Hammels. I think McKinney and Russell are going to be good, not sure on Straily , but if anyone can turn him around I feel Bosio is the man.

Cubs still have more trade chips though in James Russell, Wright, Schieholtz etc.

The thing that makes me wonder about this is the Padres made this trade without a GM in place. Why not wait another week and see if you get a better offer or if you hire your guy as GM I would guess he doesn't make this trade.

Difference with the Cubs and Pads is I don't think the Cubs would have gotten a better offer than what they got.

If it was pre-injury Headley, that would be a great trade. Unfortunately he is damaged goods. I thought it was funny that some bloggers had him tied to the Jays last week. Tossing names such as Sanchez, Norris and Pompey as possible returns. With the injury that Headley has, playing at RC would have been horrible. If Headley can produce career avg numbers and stay healthy it will be a ++ trade for the Yankees.

If Headley can be close to league average with the bat and continue to play above average defense this is an absolute win for the Yanks. They trade a couple of spare parts for a guy owed nothing but money. How do you not do that deal?

Right? Couldn't agree more. Everyone on Bo is screaming this is a bad trade for the Yankees. They traded solarte who is garbage and a pitcher who will likely be a reliever for ever. Headley is one of the best fielding 3B in the league. He goes from a pitchers park to a hitters park. This is a huge win for the yanks.

Headley just got the game-winning hit in the 14th inning in his first game as a Yankee.
And pitcher Jeff Francis got his first win as a Yankee.

Maybe we can get rid of Thorton now. He is a one pitch pitcher.

Just kidding but Francis looked alright. Hope he's not around for long but with the starters not going to far into games he might be around a bit more to eat some innings like Huff does. I think if the Yanks can acquire a number 2-3 guy for the rotation they have a good shot at the playoffs in the division. Beltran and McCann have looked a lot better recently. We need Tex to be healthy though. But having a lineup of Gardner Jeter Els Tex McCann Beltran Headley Roberts Ichiro isn't bad at all. The issue is the rotation. Pineda is close (ish) Looking like August if he can make it and if Tanaka can avoid Tommy John(fingers crossed) then a roto of Tanaka Kuroda Pineda Phelps and McCarthy is good IMO. Even without Pineda, Greene looks really good, Girardi just left him out there wayyyyy too long last start.
