Chien-Ming **** Close To Deal With Nationals
By Tim Dierkes
[February 10 at 7:52am CST]
Righty Chien-Ming **** has chosen the Nationals and is close to a deal, tweets Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe.

****, 30 in March, had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right shoulder capsule on July 29th of last year. On January 28th, ****'s agent Alan Nero told ESPN's Jayson Stark that his client is expected to "make a major-league start sometime in the first two weeks of May." **** will join Jason Marquis and John Lannan in Washington's rotation, with the remaining spots to be determined during Spring Training.

The Dodgers, Phillies, Cardinals, and Mets were also linked to **** this winter.

The Nationals are starting to look like they're not going to suck so badly anymore.

It's too bad they didn't land Orlando Hudson. I personally think that Adam Kennedy SUCKs and is one of the biggest jerks in all of baseball. That long loopy left hand stroke just aint that good.

I wish they got Hudson and ****. If they are smart, they will have a club option for year #2.

8:59am: MASN's Ben Goessling reports that **** is still seven to ten days from a decision, and nothing has changed since yesterday. MLB.com's Bill Ladson tweets that nothing is close between the Nationals and ****, though they remain a finalist. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the Nationals and one other team have made offers.

Guess he didn't sign with the Nationals after all.

Nobody said he did. The thread says he is "CLOSE" to a deal, not that he signed and is being introduced at a press conference.

Yeah I know, but it said he was close to a deal with the National's. Now he is not going to make a decision for the next week or so.

I really wish the Yankees would have thrown an offer with bonuses at him. He won 38 games in two consecutive seasons for the Yanks for crying out loud! I would love to give him a second chance!

According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, Dodgers GM Ned Colletti will watch free agent righty Chien-Ming **** throw on Wednesday afternoon in Phoenix.
It'll be Colletti's third time watching **** do his thing, and it's probably safe to assume that the Dodgers are that mystery "second" team that has been mentioned in recent reports. ****, who turns 30 soon, had back-to-back 19-win seasons in 2006 and 2007 before the injury bug bit him and ruined his last few stat lines. He is also being courted by the Nationals.

A rotation of Billingsley, Kershaw, and **** would be pretty solid but it really depends on two of the three bouncing back from their respective bumps: Billingsley's rough 2nd half and obviously ****'s shoulder recovery.

Dodgers are out:

Mark Zuckerman of Nats Insider reports that the Dodgers weren't ready to make a substantive offer for free agent right-hander Chien-Ming **** after watching him throw off flat ground on Wednesday.
****'s agent Alan Nero pushed for an answer today and the Dodgers balked, leaving the Nationals as the favorite to land the 29-year-old right-hander. It isn't known if they are willing to give him a major league contract or a non-guaranteed minor league deal. According to Zuckerman, **** hasn't begun to throw off a mound.

So in other words the Dodgers were not satisfied with ****'s ability to get it off the ground.
