To me, it sounds like there are no concerns in the Braves front office or in the Braves clubhouse that there are any significant long term medical concerns with Heyward right now. If there were, we would have at least one source reporting that the Braves are looking at treatment options. If Heyward were an NFL player, this would be a non-issue. He'd be on the field fighting to keep his spot, and would have accepted long ago the fact that as a professional athlete his physical well-being would be the price of a secure job and a decent income. I think of guys like Mickey Mantle who played almost their entire careers on bad knees and suffered all kinds of gut-wrenching injuries, but went on and played the best they could. I also think of guys I know who work on construction crews or put in long hours in other demanding jobs. They don't get hired and then call in one day and say "Hey boss, my back's bothering me, I'm not coming in until I feel right." Bossman would say, "Then don't bother coming back."

The one thought that keeps coming up in my mind is that Heyward probably has someone in his ear (a parent, an agent, etc) saying, "You gotta' stay 100% healthy until you can sign a big long-term contract. If you get hurt now, it could cost you a lot of money." It's not an incorrect perspective, but that kind of thinking doesn't go over well with fans or teammates.

Also, I don't think Chipper was being mean or overly critical. I think he was being honest. If Heyward has some other reason for sitting out, he knows where to find Chipper to clear the air.

It appears that he will be a guy who will put up nice numbers every year, but will also miss 2 months every year. Unfortunately, he will fade away after a few years and be another "cant miss" failing to live up to the his potential due to frailty or attitude. Wouldnt be surprised since I traded Stanton for him early in my fantasy season. I just had a gut feeling I was going to lose on the deal.

This is an interesting thought. Maybe JHey will follow another prominent, young Brave from years ago - Andruw - and will be written off at age 33.

That is the guy I was thinking of. Here is a bit from Rotoworld that brings up another cant miss prospect.

"Jason Heyward debuted with a home run and four RBI, which is great and all, but did you know that Jeremy Hermida did the exact same thing - and did it in a single at-bat?"

hahahahaha a grown man that goes by "chipper" has no say in anything. what a tool.

Chipper is a HOF-bound veteran who has stayed with the same team his whole career. He can say just about anything he wants as long as it's for the good of the team in my opinion.

"chipper" also cheated on his wife with a hooters waitress. hall of fame all the way.
Go check out the lifestyles of Ruth and Mantle let me know if they too sound HOF worthy ::facepalm:: On the field play only is what matters and if you think Chippers the only professional athlete that cheated on his spouse then your obviously narrow-minded.

Chipper said what needed to be said. Heyward at 80% is much better than what we have now in RF, hell he's a better upgrade over anyone currently playing in the OF. We need his bat presence especially after the terrible offense the Braves have become.

I. Cheating on his wife will not keep him out of HOF. See Mantle, Ruth.
II.
a) If Chipper is coming out to the media and saying it, I would venture to guess he knows something more than we do/ are speculating about, e.g., it is Heyward's decision at this point and not a trainer's.
b) If it is out of Heyward's hand and in those of the trainer/doctor, then Chipper has no business going to the media with this.
III. If any of you have played at a highly competitive level (note: High School Varsity does not qualify) then you know how hard it is to be out with an injury while your team plays on. You are itching to get back out there, but a smart person does have to be sensible and hold themselves back if it will hurt them in the long run, or even their team in the short run if they aren't quit ready - something I have seen first hand before, especially with pitchers.

I think Chipper was trying to give him some advice and what he said is not as bad as some are making it out to be on the blogs, sports talk radio. J-Hey is young but as Chipper inferred he's still much better at 80% than most are at 100%.

I don't understand how baseball players are getting hurt so much outside of getting hit by a pitch, a freak collision at the plate. It's a very low contact sport compared to all of the other big sports.

A lot of these guys need to sack up a bit more. Chipper puts it out there and gets the fans agreeing with him and the player realizes it's hurting his reputation a bit. He's a HOF lock and has earned the right to put himself out there.

The other point I have to make is that I think McCann is prob next in line as clubhouse leader of the team not Heyward anyways. J-Hey is young and uber talented but he's got to mature some.

You have to make a lot of stops and starts and make quick bursts a lot of times from a stationary position. Also throwing overhand is an unnatural motion. Diving for balls, running into walls. There are a lot of ways to get injured without it being a contact sport. Look at gymnastics.
Have you ever played 150+ game season? It is pretty grueling.

I think Chipper has earned the right to call out J Hey. However, if Heyward comes back too soon and suffers a serious season ending injury, that could happen. I would say for a player like Heyward, he should play if he just has a slight injury because he's not a player who is crashing into walls or making crazy dives in the outfield. Most ballplayers play thorough some sort of injury. However, if his injury is detrimental to the team, he should by all means rest and heal up.

"Chipper" is a great handle and a throwback to when nicknames were more about feel than corporate slickness.

"J-Hey"? "A-Rod"? "Car-Go"? "Man-Ram?"

Lame attempts, all of them. Bring some flavor back to baseball nicknames!!!

I could care less about the dude's comments.

Awww, poor kid. Did I strike a nerve?
Look, it's insane for someone to be called out for a nickname that they were GIVEN by someone using a nickname that they gave themselves. Additionally, it's hard for anyone to call out a grown man for a child-like nickname when you - well- are on a baseball card forum.

Cry all you want. I didn't call you out for being on a message board. Have you reached reading comprehension in your elementary school classes, yet?
