In August, any player can be put on waivers.

If that player passes through waivers without being claimed, then that player can be traded.

If a player is claimed, the current team has three options:

1. Pull the player back from waivers, and keep him.
2. Let the player go to the claiming team and receive nothing in returne (ie. Alex Rios - Toronto did it to dump the salary).
3. Trade the player to the claiming team.

So, just because the Yankees claimed Carter, does not mean the Yankees will get him. It depends on what Boston does with him.

How long do the Red Sox have to make a decision?

Yeah I thought he was sent off for Wagner

In order for him to go to the Mets I think he needs to clear waivers as well.

So, will that negate the Wagner deal? Or will they just have to find another player to send?

He does have to pass waivers before he can be traded. The Yankees claiming him causes the Red Sox to have to keep him on there 40 man roster for the remainder of the season.

not really though. The mets wanted to dump him anyway..so the sox will just send another player. Not much of a big deal.

Not entirely accurate. The Yankees can claim him to block a deal, yes, but being that they have the best record means they also have the last priority in claiming. The Mets will EASILY outrank them in waiver priority.

Yeah but he was already claimed. Carter will just play the rest of the year out with the Red Sox and then be sent to the Mets after the Season.

I thought that the league of the team placing him on waivers gets first priority. Meaning, the Yankees will have a shot before the Mets each time.

I don't think that's correct.

If I'm not mistaken, the Wagner deal involved a "Player to be Named Later", which I can only guess was to be Carter if/when he passed through waivers.

Now if the Mets made a claim on Wagner, that would mean one of two things:

1. Red Sox can just send him to the Mets, but that would not fulfill the PTBNL part of the trade. That would be a straight up waiver acquisition.

2. Red Sox can agree to "trade" him to the Mets, but that would be a completely separate deal, thus not fulfilling the PTBNL and instead now making another trade necessary for Carter.

Now with the Yankees putting the claim on him, and Boston most likely pulling him back, the Red Sox can probably just wait til the end of the season to send him to the Mets, when waivers don't matter.

Chances are the Mets wanted an "MLB Ready" player, thus the need for a guy on the 40-man roster to go...so I'm not sure if a non-40-man roster player would end up being the PTBNL.
