To me, these are the top four, but #5 could be Weaver, Buchholz, Verlander, etc. We have to assume that Lester will steal votes from Buchholz.

The main problem is, Buchholz has pitched to almost the same ERA as Hernandez....with 76 less innings pitched.

Hernandez averages 7.1 IP per start.

Buchholz averages 6 IP per start.

When you only have 145.2 IP, 76 innings makes a big difference.

Buchholz ERA is based on a lot less innings pitched, and simply doesn't carry the weight.

I would be stunned if CC doesn't end up with it, just basing it on how I've seen the votes go the last few years. Here is my current ballot

Hernandez
Lester
CC
Price
Buchholz

Lester and Buchholz each have one more chance. I think if Lester can finish 20-8, have an ERA of .30 better than CC, and 30+ more K's in 25 less innings, he should certainly be ahead of him.

I don't know if I could put anyone ahead of King Felix though, unless Lester or Buchholz throw a no hitter to end the season. I don't care that he only has 12 wins. His ERA is a full run better than CC, and 3/4 of a run better than Lester's. Buchholz has matched Felix's ERA, but has 70 less IP, and 100 fewer K's.

Usually that is the case, that is why I do not see Felix winning the Cy. (Not saying he doesn't deserve it but 19-20 wins looks a heck of a lot better than 12)

EDIT: Although Fernando Valenzuela won the Cy Young with only 13 wins as a starter (Lowest amount of wins for a SP to win Cy)

Let's be a bit more realistic......how about on teams that are WINNERS?

Felix had PLENTY of opportunites to pitch well when the games MATTER.

Sox are still mathematically alive, no thanks to Papelbon, and Buchholz and Lester are pitching games that MATTER.

CC couldn't pitch well at home against the Rays for the DIVISION.


If people think Buchholz is finishing 3rd or 5th when he wins against the yanks and is 18-7 with a 2.35 ERA they are misconstrued.

It has seemed over the past few years that there is at least starting to be more discussion about wins not being the end all be all for the CY. I think it is trending that way, not sure if it will be in full effect yet

Lester and Buchholz have pitched very well against the Rays and Yanks this season....I can tell you one thing, Cy Young winner will be from the AL East
