The west is there to be had. If the M's tightened up on defense and got a couple reliable hitters, they could run away in the West.
After Felix and Lee, who's left that can dominate as a starting pitcher? Where's Seattle's power going to come from?

I think as soon as the angels get their pitching in line (bullpen:Shields,Fuentes) (starters:Kazmir, Pineiro, Saunders), they'll run away with the division again.

Morales, Hunter, Matsui, and even guys like Abreu, Rivera, Kendrick, and Napoli will carry this team all at certain times this year.

I'll take the angels starting 5 of Weaver, Santana, Saunders, Pineiro, and Kazmir over any staff in the AL West. Oakland will have a great staff in a couple of years but they're still too young right now. We'll see how Ben Sheets is at the All Star break.

Actually, once Bedard is back, and if healthy, they've basically got 3 #1 pitchers, and behind that...

Ryan Rowland-Smith (who is an excellent #4 starter)
Doug Fister (who has been absolutely on fire this season - and with the exception of about 2 poor starts last season, has been outstanding since coming up to the majors).

And yes, outside of Seattle, these are two guys most probably haven't paid much attention to. The pitching isn't the issue with Seattle, it's obviously their offense (specifically the power).
Fister has been a surprise. Wait until the league sees him a second time. To call Bedard a third #1 is funny. Dude is in the same boat as Ben Sheets. When is the last time he had a healthy season? O's stole Adam Jones, Chris Tillman and Sherrill in that deal. Rowland-Smith is nothing special. I'd rather have Kazmir or Pineiro as the #4 and #5 starters.

Halos have hit 24 homers to date. Seattle has 9 which includes 3 from Kotchman. He'll be lucky to hit more than 15 this year. Angels pitching will round into shape and they'll probably pull away in late May early June when they have 3 at home vs. Toronto, followed by 3 at home vs. Seattle, 3 @ KC, 3 @ Seattle, and 4 @ Oakland.

a healthy Bedard is a legit #1 IMO. look at his last 2 injured struggling terrible flawed years- 30 games, 3.24 ERA.. thats pretty darn good for someone with a noodle.
if he can harden that noodle he will give Felix and Cliff a run for their era money.

Injured players will get re-injured. The Rangers keep picking up scrap heap players in hopes they can remain healthy.

The Angels have been a very resourceful team, but they've had players get hurt in the last few years. If they stay healthy, they should win the west, but I don't think they will run away with it. Seattle just needs a couple pick ups to stay right with them.

What's funny about calling Bedard a third #1?? Is it the health issue?? Look at his numbers when he's healthy...he IS a #1 pitcher.

What's funny is that you're okay giving the Angels rotation the benefit of the doubt (all starters with an above 4.50 ERA except Weaver). And you're willing to give Shields the benefit of the doubt (10.00+ ERA in 10 games). But you're not willing to give Erik Bedard the benefit of the doubt that he can come back healthy??

You're okay relying on Joel Pineiro, who had a career year last year...BY A LONG SHOT!! Since 2004, Pineiro has had an ERA under 4.50 twice. Since 2004, he's won 10+ games once. Since 2004, he's thrown 200+ innings once. What are you actually expecting out of him this year?? Same numbers as last year? If so, you've got some very lofty expectations...of course, and Pineiro would be a pretty good #4 or #5...too bad he's being PAID like a #1 or #2 guy.

As for RRS not being "anything special"...you're right. He's just a #4 pitcher with a career sub-3.80 ERA who has pitched VERY well against AL West teams (3.29 ERA vs. LAA, 3.62 ERA vs. OAK, 1.04 ERA vs. TEX).

Fister...he is a surprise in that he's pitching THIS well. You're right, second time around, maybe the teams will figure him out. BUT, how is it that the Angels pitchers will improve the second time around, but Fister will "get figured out"??

Regardless, I'll gladly take Felix, Lee, Bedard, RRS, Fister - top to bottom - over Weaver, Pineiro, Santana, Saunders, Kazmir any day of the week.

Sly, thought I would bump this one for you. As I predicted, the Halos have won the 4 series above winning 2 of 3 vs. Toronto, 2 of 3 vs. Seattle, 3 of 4 vs. KC and both games of the 3 game series against your M's.

Check out Santana's numbers the last 5 games. 5-0 with a 1.80 ERA. If you check his last 10 games, he's 6-1 with an ERA is 2.69. Weaver is 5-2 with a 2.74 ERA Saunders have brought his ERA down from 5.74 to 4.78 since May 1st. Kazmir's last start is hopefully something he can build from since he didn't have a spring training. We'll see how Pineiro pitches tomorrow against your M's. Our pen has settled down a little with the Trevor Bell and Francisco Rodriguez stepping it up. I think we may see them release Scot Shields like Justin Speier if he doesn't get his mechanics ironed out soon.

First time the halos have been 2 games over 500 all year. We'll see how they do this upcoming week with 4 in Oakland followed by 3 in LA vs. the Dodgers.

Shouldn't you be sleeping like Griffey in the clubhouse???

Fuentes is what he is. He has a vested option for next year if he finishes 55 games. I can guarantee you he won't be allowed to have his option vest. They'll make him a situational closer if he gets close to his kick in number. They had Francisco Rodriguez in the pen warming up on Friday night in case he got in more trouble. Rodney may be the closer after the all star break if he keeps giving up a run an inning when he comes in.
