Here's one of the reasons it is going to be a long time (excluding some external source that really puts the hammer on them) before we see a college playoff. Right now the BCS is controlled not by the NCAA, but by the college presidents of the BCS conferences. So where does the hundreds of millions or billions of dollars go, straight to the BCS schools. If the NCAA came up with a playoff, that money would be spread around to every NCAA school. Do you think those 50 or so BCS schools want to split that money among 150 schools (just guessing, have no idea how many D1 schools there are)? Those guys are going to fight to the death to keep that money to themselves (especially in this economy with most states slashing budgets for public universities).
