Walter Johnson (see avatar) and Cy Young for me. I consider WJ to be the greatest pitcher all time, and the fact that the award is named after Young and he was on the Red Sox would make this incredible. 2 of my favorite players all time, and WJ is #1 .
This is tough but I am going with Ruth and Cobb. They are in my opinion the best two to play the game, and I could not pass up the chance at either of them. Can't go wrong with any of the choice though
Walter Johnson / Cy Young would be my dream pairing. For someone who enjoys watching a great pitcher work, you can't beat possibly the two greatest to ever play.
Its an interesting question as to who I would choose on a card...well I would have to go with Ruth and Gehrig. Not because of the value, but because of their ties to my love for the game. Here's why. One of my favorite all time movies is 'The Goonies'. There was a scene in the movie where one of the main characters, Sean Astin, finds the petrified remains of a long forgotten treasure hunter. While searching for clues as to the identity of the bones in front of them, Astin's character finds an "old" baseball card of Lou Gehrig. From that point on, I started looking at old shops and jumped on the baseball card bandwagon. I wanted to find a treasure like he did with that old baseball card. I was living in Greensboro at the time, and their minor league team was an affiliate of the Yankees so I didn't have to go far to start seeing Gehrig's name pop up in the almanacs and programs at games. As for Ruth, I remember getting into Starting Lineups in the late 80's when they first came out. My buddy had a Cooperstown SLU of someone I can't remember and I wanted to add one to my collection. So, with my grandfather in tow, I went to Toys R Us and scoured the aisles til I came across the SLU display. Lo and behold, they had a Ruth. I was a young fan of the Yankees at the time and I recognized the team logo so I said....hmmm...who is this Ruth guy? From there I started reading up on him and realized he was one of the greatest to ever play the game. So, in short, a movie clip and a plastic figurine started my passion for arguably two of the greatest hitters to step on the field and play the game.
My first choice is definitely Ruth. He will always be thought of as the greatest baseball player of all time regardless of what anyone else does, he was the first. My second choice was a little more difficult. I thought Gerhig because it financially it mad more sense, but ultimately this would be a PC piece so Clemente gets the nod. I never saw him play but always admired the fact that he was well respected by his peers and was taken too early in life while trying to help other people. Makes perfect sense to me that he be the other signature on the card.
