I was in a wedding last weekend in Atlanta, lucky enough to be the best man for my friend Stephen. He's on his honeymoon right now in the Bahamas while I'm in IL waiting on the snow. He works in the Braves team store at Turner Field, and every now and then he sends me cool pictures of items in the shop. One day, he told me about a Cubs flag that they were selling that flew in Turner Field sometime during 2010-2011. Braves apparently didn't start authenticating them until later. I jokingly told him that it would make a great best man's gift. I told him that I would probably buy it if I had the cash, but my wife was pregnant with our 2nd son at the time, and would have killed me. Fast forward to last weekend, and I open a box with the following inside:
Needless to say, I was pretty stoked. I had forgotten about our conversation, so I was genuinely surprised when I pulled it out of the box. It's going to be a great centerpiece for my man cave once my wife and I purchase our first house.
After I opened this, he told me that he had my Christmas present as well. Something else that he had made mention of, but had slipped my mind in the mix of me being 8 hours from him, having a new baby and normal everyday life.
He had told me a story one day of how he found a few Braves BP jerseys of Ken Griffey Jr. in a box in the back room of the team store. Before Griffey returned to Seattle in 2009, he strongly considered signing with Atlanta, since they are fairly close to his home in Orlando. In the end, he decided to go back home to Seattle. Sometime inbetween, we think Atlanta made up a few BP jerseys for Griffey just in case. When Stephen found these in the back room, there were 2 jerseys. A day after putting them out for sale, he went back and grabbed one for me. The other had already been purchased. Knowing how much of a Griffey fan I am, he knew how much I would like this.
Maybe 1 of only 2 ever made, and a what might have been sort of cool thing, is this:
Neither of these will ever leave my collection, and I really just wanted to share this with everyone here, as I figured it might be a good read. Hopefully I wasn't wrong.
