....as a player coach at AAA. Baez couldn't have asked for a better role model. :)

Cubs Sign Manny Ramirez
By Zach Links [May 25, 2014 at 11:03am CDT]
The Cubs announced that they have signed Manny Ramirez to a minor league deal to be a player-coach at Triple-A Iowa. Ramirez is represented by Praver/Shapiro, as shown in the MLBTR Agency Database.

“While Manny is not and will not be a fit on the Cubs major league roster, we do think at this stage of his life he’s a nice fit as a mentor for some of the young talented hitters we have in the organization,” Epstein said in the press release. “Manny will coach full-time and play part-time in a limited role that does not take at-bats away from our prospects. If he shows there is still some magic in his bat, perhaps he will find his way to the major leagues and help another team, but that is not why he is here. We are thrilled that he wants to work with our young hitters and make a difference.”

Brilliant hitter, questionable influence. Not sure if want him as a coach hanging around players all the time unless something in his character has changed.

Cubs President Theo Epstein was Manny's GM for seven years in Boston.
He knows much more about Manny's influence and locker room presence than what we read in the media.

As for his PED use, McGwire has become a successful coach for the Cardinals and Dodgers, so maybe Manny can be too.
Sometimes people who have done wrong in the past (like most successful motivational speakers) can teach people much more effectively than people who have lived a charmed life.

Plus, Manny's fun and upbeat, so he'll keep the players loose. I think it's a good signing.

On the surface this "looks" like a bad move, but it really is a good move. Theo knows Manny and the Cubs are looking for mentors of sorts with Latin American roots
