Some of us are geezer enough to remember watching Spud Webb win the dunk contest--which was spectacular, by the way--and when Craig Hodges hit 30 or whatever 3's in a row. Totally blew everyone away. They just can't capture that excitement anymore.

Why not? Sounds like you do have the geezer mentality. Unless you just mean the 19 in a row that Hodges hit. Yes, they will never capture that excitement since in all the years of doing it the next best is 11. If you mean overall about the dunk contest and 3pt contest then I don't understand why they can't capture the same excitement.

Re: Dear 3 Point Contest: You suck...

Guess I just don't get into the props and stuff for the dunk contest. And if I have the geezer mentality, guilty as charged. The NBA is the dullest pro sport IMO, and this is their weekend to shine. As a less than casual fan of the NBA, it is hard to get me excited about watching the dunk contest tonight, and I used to love it. There's no creativity involved in the 3-point shootout, so I enjoy it more as a skill demonstration. I guess the excitement factor comes down to the names. The top names in the league don't participate in these events like they used to, and that's why the casual fan doesn't watch. I have no idea who these guys are, except for Kevin Love--only because he's with the Wolves.

I'm 26 and must have the "geezer metality." The recent All-Star Game and festivities surrounding are an absolute embarrassment to the league. Anyone who paid money for at ticket to last night's events should ask for their money back. The stars don't participate anymore unless it's one-and-done fashion.

Sadly, the NBA needs to add incentive for player participation. I'm pretty sure Kia single-handedly got Blake Griffin in last year's dunk contest.

And the guy who wants non-three point shooters in the 3 point competition...really?

Re: Dear 3 Point Contest: You suck...

The geezer mentality comment was based on the "They can't capture that excitement anymore." I don't understand why "old" always means better, and that's how I took that comment. I don't get why they can't capture that excitement in the 3pt contest. The dunk contest is probably played out though. Kind of along the lines up saying basketball is the dullest sport. We're on a message board that is primarily baseball fans, so I get the comment. I get people not liking basketball, but I personally don't understand saying anything is duller than baseball other than golf or watching the grass grow. At least there is action throughout a basketball game, not just every 60 seconds when the pitcher decides to throw. Most pitches result in a strike, a ball, or a foul. In the rare instance where contact is made, there is action for 5-6 seconds and then repeat the waiting.

As for last night. Yes, the dunk contest sucked. I don't see how they fix it. The big names don't want to be in it because they have nothing to gain from it. We've seen every variation of jumping from the foul line, 360, windmill, reverse, etc... No one gets excited for that anymore, so the players have to try to be creative and add props or the showmanship to it. So then you have the people complaining about the prop dunks that came from people complaining about no innovation in the dunks.

I don't know how you could ask for a better 3 point contest. Two of the bigger stars in the league going head to head in the finals and needing a tiebreaker round? Big names and it coming down to the last shot. Can't ask for much more.

Bill Simmons suggested moving the Dunk Contest to Friday night and moving the rookie/sophomores game to Saturday. I think that's a great idea since the rookie game is much more entertaining than the dunk contest.

Rookie/sophomore games is as bad (or good, depending on your opinion) as the NFL Pro Bowl. I personallly think it's absolutely horrible. It's not even basketball...not even gym-rat basketball. There's more D played down at the YMCA... yeah, turnovers are funny...thanks guys! Uncontested slam dunks? Riveting!!!
As for the 3-point contest...the ONLY thing that saved it, because it was half-way enjoyable, was that Kevin Durant stepped in on days notice...if that was Kevin Love vs Joe Johnson, I would have jabbed my eyes out with dull pencils.
Brings me back to the original post: get the stars to compete!

So then the complaint against the game itself isn't anything to do with basketball or the NBA. That's the problem with all all star games except baseball, and that's only because you can't try any more or less when playing baseball.

I think the NBA is the best of the three athletic based sports because while the game is changed you see some amazing plays and the standout guys like Lebron, Kobe or Durant that can still take over a game even amongst a group of the best on the planet.

So you actually mean bring back the superstars. Saying Love and Johnson aren't stars is crazy. If you just want to see Lebron, Kobe, Durant, Wade and Jeremy Lin compete in every skills, dunk, and 3 pt contest then that is fine. I think a lot of casual fans, or casual complainers, would feel exactly the same.

uuughhh..you lost me at Jeremy Lin... ::facepalm::
 (I know you were being facetious!)

Hey, My tune may change about Love...I remember him from UCLA not really as a shooter, maybe because his free throw % was kinda low ( ia can't find college stats, so I may be wrong) He opened my eyes a little this weekend as a shooter, obviously...

By the way, I was in no way bagging on the actual All-Star game...I love the NBA all-star game: THe stars are all there and they compete! (Well, in the 4th quarter they compete! :D ) But that's fine! Entertain me for three quartes and then compete! THe NBA All-Star game blows away any other sport as far as the actual "game" goes. I am totally with you on that!

Glad you picked up on the Lin joke.

If you pay attention you should change your mind on Love. He plays a very old school style, but mixes in the current tendency of big men that can create spacing with an outside shot. He's an amazing rebounder, great outlet passer to start the fast break, and loyal to his team. He bucked the trend of superstars just waiting until they can sign where they want, and signed long term with the Wolves.

Great game! Everything I would have wanted! I was not too happy that Lebron started taking over, but I am glad he had the big TO at the end! Durant is amazing! No more negativity...I changed the thread title!

Yay, a positive statement about the NBA on the basketball boards. That's all I wanted. :D

Good game. As always, fun athletic plays, crazy passes and alley oops and no defense for 3 quarters. Then in the 4th there is always a big come back and it comes down to the wire.

Oh Yeah! I totally forgot! Remember that one time, when that one guy was turning, and he almost didn't turn, and I was like, "TURN!" and he turned right at the last second and went around the corner! An that classic year when the racers all went straight for a while then turned, and they just kept doing it! That was awesome! Who can forget the unforgettable year when the racers were all waiting to start, and the guy throws this flag, and they all pushed the gas pedal at the same time! I was shocked! I think they ended up turning quite a bit that year, too. Mostly straight, but sometimes they turned.
Thanks for reminding me! ;)

I can't believe people pay to go to Fenway park to drink $8 watered down Bud Lights and sing Sweet Carolina but they do.

The NBA All star game has star power and unlike Baseball the superstar players are actually playing at the end of the game

Paid $75 for All-Star game in 2010. It's worth it

For All-Star exhibition make it money-based incentive. Million dollars to win tops it all.
