I was stunned when I saw a Maurice Jones-Drew Exquisite Auto Patch /199 sell for $150 recently. Considering all he has accomplished in his young career this just seemed low to me. Especially, when you take into consideration the fact that a guy like Knowshown Moreno has Auto Patches /25 from Topps Chrome that are far uglier than Exquisite selling for $150 and he is only 5 games in. Does this bode well for the hobby?

Funny you should mention drew a guy on another site was selling a /199 esq patch 4 color for UNDER 150 and it seemed ridculously low. Something is wrong with the football card world.......I didn't see it coming.....the recession is beating it down with a club where I didn't see the baseball card followers nearly as affected. This year has been ho-hum for collectors other than a hot rookie here or there or a 250 yard receiving performance......there seems to be very few 100 yard rushers and receivers on a consistent basis. The two back set and the 'thunder and lightning' has prevented gawdy numbers....look at Jacobs and Bradshaw for the Giants.....Bradshaw might eclipse 1500 yards if he was the featured back.....yet he gains 110 yards this week then next week gets 6 carries for 34 yards then gets forgotten......there is no build up or sizzle to this year's collecting....no continuity or momentum. I collected two players last year I thought were going to break out big time......Roddy White and Michael Turner......i spent a ton of cash.......they both cashed in very nicely however I don't see any of the RBs or WRs having real break out years other than the usual suspects who have been there done that and see very little growth in their respective products.

I got on board what I thought was going to be a break out season for Pierre Thomas until he was hurt and virtually permanently replaced by Mike Bell. Bell was seen as filling in and being a short yardage back projected at 300 yards or so for the season, now the coach wants to split carries down the middle....virtually crushing the potential of my investment. Luckily in very few opportunities Thomas has surpassed expectations so I can still make a small profit.

Why the shock?

People have always been more willing to overspend for "potential" than results. It's completely nuts, but it is evident in every sport. This is the same reason that most top prospects in baseball reach their financial peaks in this hobby BEFORE they step foot in the Majors.

Well I've seen this to a degree before but it seems more pronounced than ever now...making me think it is getting worse.

Not for nothing, but the MoDo Exquisite has never sold for much more than that. Sure, he is very good, but also plays for one of the least supported franchises in the league. Also, RCs are always much more expensive when you buy them in the current year, that's why it's always best to wait, even guys like Ryan and AP have had soft spots where it was good to pick them up (RCs dropping after rookie years is true in every sport, not just football). On the other hand, Moreno is a hot current rookie for one of the most collected franchises in the league, of course his cards are going to sell high during his rookie year.

Now, look at the Reggie Bush Exquisite, it still sells for hundreds and he's not even very good (granted, it was over $1000 before the hype died out, but it's still very high for what he's done).

Rodgers SP Authentic is going for over $500, Palmer's still gets hundreds, and for some reason Vick's still goes for $400+. The MoDo is just a bad example and not indicitive of the hobby as a whole.

Also, look at the long term of short term (i.e. the end of one season's releases of cards), cards come out hot and people continually overpay for cards from first half season releases, when anyone that would take two seconds to look at the football industry would know, that no matter how hot a guy gets during the season, every card released before week 8 can be had for a fraction once we get to the playoffs.

The bulk of football buyers have extremely short attention spans is seems. People flock to who is hyped or who just had a great game. Players with consistent performance get overlooked because they are not the "right now" fad.

That's true, the teams still matter a lot I guess...Moreno does play for the Broncos who are on the opposite side of the spectrum as far as support too.

Miles Austin is a great example.
