Okay, I should know everything about the guy, but am I missing something here? Gwynn retired in 2001, and Padres changed uniforms (took out the ORANGE and added the SAND) in 2003 or so...

The back of the card says "game used jersey", but it doesn't say "Gwynn game used"...

Anyone see something that I'm missing?

no way did he ever wear that jersey in a game. those jerseys came out in 2004 and gwynn retired in 2001 so i have no idea where upper deck is doing on that example. thanks for sharing

In 2004 they officially retired gwynns number and I know this is a far stretch but it is conceivable that he wore a jersey for that day or a couple of times that year and upperdeck used that? Like what was said above the patch that is in the card more than likley came from the 2004 shoulder/sleeve patch. I know that a lot of the cards from that set did have logo patches in them even though it says jersey on the back. Infact I have a felix hernandez patch auto and it states jersey on the back. Good luck with it.

Yea they could have used a Tony Gwynn Jr jersey. I know they have mixed up their autos before.

Tony Gwynn Jr. was traded to the Padres earlier this season. Maybe its a Brewers jersey?

So after more research, I found where the patch on my card came from:
padreslogo.gif

From the right side of the logo, the top of the "S".
It's an arm patch, on the newer uniform, which I am pretty sure Gwynn did not wear...
THis is a 2008 card, before Junior was even there...

It wouldn't be the first time that a company has screwed up a jersey swatch, and definitely won't be the last.

Of course, this could be from Spring Training, etc...but who knows what the definition of "game used jersey" actually is. There are plenty of solid reasons that people don't put too much into game-used cards...and this is a pretty good reason.

I found a few jerseys that look like they could have possibly had a patch that maybe could match.
Also, did you pulll this card? Can't take away the possibility that it was faked by someone, and not a mistake by UD.

I could be way off, but that looks like a Brewers Jersey. If I remember correctly, Gwynn Jr. played for the Brewers. It could be possible that they put in a Tony Gwynn Jr. Brewers Patch in that card.

He did play with the Brewers, but I think the Brewer's yellow in their patches is a little more gold and speckled and less flat yellow as the patch shown above:

I found this, they defiantly made this jersey maybe Upper Deck Grabbed some throw them on his back made him play pickle catch out side in the parking lot ( Upper Deck is near San Diego) and called it game. So there you go game used jersey patch!!
Sorry for the link I couldn't post the pic for some reason.

Spring training games are considered professional games, so if he was ever a coach for a Padres spring training game that would be enough to consider it game-used. In 2008 Ultimate Collection Billy Williams has a jumbo patch (and a few other cards from past years) that feature a light blue jersey with white pinstripe. The Cubs did not wear that jersey when he played, but they did wear it a few years later, when he probably came to spring training as a coach. A lot of teams bring back popular players to spring training, not only for the young players to learn from but to make spring training more attractive to fans.

It's definitely a Padre's logo...why it's in that card is anybody's guess.

BunchOBull- By the way, this is some OUTSTANDING detective work! Thanks BunchOBull for this! You have skills!

MrWhiteSox30- THis is my favorite idea. It's the one I can hope for, because it's clear he didn't play in this.
