Do message boards influence your collecting habits?

Would your collecting habits be the same if you could never showcase your collection on any forums? Online collecting has helped so many collectors from vintage to player to prospect enhance collections and I often wonder, would you still put in as much effort if there wasn't an online community to show off to?

Yes. Im just starting out, i like to see what people pull out of their boxes. the box breaks influence what packs/boxes i decide to buy. as far as what types of cards i collect, it doesnt influence me, but i havent exactly figured out what i want to collect either!

I get a lot of collecting ideas from the boards and I make sure to watch box breaks before I buy any newly-released wax, so it has definitely influenced my collecting. I've never bought anything just for the sake of showing off, although I have to admit I've bought things and immediately thought, "hmmm this is some prime sig material."

Yep, I honestly never had a "collection" per-say until I joined BMB. I just busted wax and kept the cards. Trading was a huge part of getting my collection started.

Plus, you guys are the only ones who enjoy seeing/appreciate my PC.

I wish people understood that making me quit the hobby makes my friends quit who get there friends to quit and so on. To all the scums on here who only care about the money that means less cash for you. (I prospect but I do not only do it for profit)

I typically don't display my collection, however the board does influence what I buy. I had no idea that Nick Ramirez had any cards until someone had posted something about how much on fire he was and looking at the hot list to find out he has some USA cards. If it wasn't for Beckett to start out with and now FCB, I probably would have stayed out of cards a long time ago.

What would this hobby ever do without Strasburgmania?


I don't think my habits are affected much. I player collect one guy and get IP autos, so I don't think message boards really affect them. The box breaks on here do entirely determine what boxes/blasters/packs I buy. I don't rip much but seeing people on here get cool stuff will sometimes lead to me buying wax.

Wax, 90s inserts and hot prospects are things that I think this message board plays a huge influence on.

Your age can only be an excuse for so long. The problem with the kids on this site is that they think they can say whatever and it's ok because they're young, but don't want any part of people digging at them about it.

Back on topic, I don't consider it showing off when I post one or more of my cards, its to share my enthusiasm and appreciation for the cards I have. I don't look to instill envy into anyone, and I don't (normally ) feel envious of anyone when they do show them. Its about the cards not the people who own them.

With that said there's definitely a strong community aspect to card collecting, its nice for someone else to understand and appreciate your collection... I don't think anyone wants someone else to look at their collection and say "blah".

Its been really tough over the last 15 or so years in the hobby to maintain a community in that all the releases out there make it difficult to understand and appreciate what someone else has, it can be easy not to understand the different ways someone could possibly collect.

I sometimes think some people think only one or two cards makes a collection which is a mistake by definition. Also sometimes people think much too highly of all the 'best cards' lists that are produced here, people should be able to figure out for themselves what the best of something is before sharing their opinions with everyone else.
