It seems like a fair number of members track the amount of money they spend on cards. Is that just part of the OCD or collector make-up?

I really have no idea how much I spent on my collection. Individual cards...sure, ballpark figures I guess. However, I don't feel the need to track what I spend.

Do you track your hobby spend? If so, do you track it to stay on a budget, calculate profit/loss or just as an FYI?

I have no clue how much I have put into my collection....Between trading, online buying and flea market/card show/LCS pick-ups I feel that trying to figure out where it all went and how much was spent where would eat up twice as much time.

Also, to the OP, maybe you should add a poll.

I track on a monthly basis as part of the household budget, but not an annual basis. I set myself a rough limit each month and then I try to not go over that number before the end of the month. So if I spend very little one month (my June has been pretty slow), I can spend more the next month.

Paypal has made this really easy. I probably should start tracking on an annual basis. I did in 2008 and compared it to my 401-K and wished I had spent a lot more money on baseball cards.

I can remember what I've paid for every card worth more than $20.

For example, I paid $110 for a 1992 Hoops Magic's All Rookie Team Alonzo Mourning.

Ugh, I'm gonna go chug a bottle of Drano

Just on a monthly basis for budgeting purposes, but I started doing that with every dollar I spend this year since it's my first year with a mortgage to pay. It just helps me be aware of where my money is going.

I used to keep track of my spending, but an accident occurred, and now I can't get it back.

How much did you pay for the Harold Minor from that set? ;)

GO TO HELL!

$65 ::facepalm::

lol...

I got one many years later for $5, just to say I have it.

I have quite a few cards like that, which I bought on the cheap many years after the hoopla just to have it.

The Holy Grail of such cards is the gold auto 1992 Topps Brien Taylor, I will own that card someday for dirt $$$

oh and the 20lbs of lucite it's encrusted in

I bought a Mourning for $1...Minor for 50 cents...Taylor Auto for $20.

I'm working on the 1992-93 Fleer Team Leaders set. The MJ still sells well. I'd like to pick up a Shaq Beam Team some day. I love those early 90's cards that used to be smoking hot.

I could probably tell you where I got it, how I got it, and how much I paid for just about every card I own, but that's mostly just having a good memory.

I stick to a pretty tight budget, so I never worry too much about how much I have spent on cards. I am now buying cards of ex-Pirates and flamed out Pirate prospects that I drooled over 5-6 years ago for $.99+shipping, and have found the hobby to be far more enjoyable than when I used to be dropping $30-40 a week on wax.
