Being polite is a very big deal for me and my family. We always say please and thank you. My kids understand this and are pretty good at saying it all the time. Now we're working on looking people in the eye while saying it and saying it loud enough they can hear you.

If someone is wearing a name tag, a checker at Wal-Mart, Home Depot, etc, I try to say their name when thanking them as well.

It costs nothing to be polite. It's easy to do, and it's appreciated nearly 100% of the time
.

I work at a grocery store and if everyone showed me respect and treated me like an equal, not like someone who is at their every request, the job would go a lot smoother.

I completely agree. Honestly, I can tell almost every single time that it means something to the checkers that I say "thank you" and include their name.

My students always find it odd that I say sir and ma'am to them. I also refer to them as "Mr." or "Miss" and their respective last names.

As time goes on, I notice that most of my students come around to using the same pleasantries towards me.
This is what it is about. Teaching through actions.

I also work with the public and have come to the conclusion that everyone should be required at some point to work retail. This way they could appreciate what it is to be "nice" to people instead of hateful and treat people like they want to be treated.

Being polite while trying to obtain autographs goes a long way.

I say "thank you and good luck this season" to every player I get an autograph from

Carrying this a bit further...I think it should be required that everyone spend at least a week in a third world country helping people out there. That way they would appreciate everything they have here.

Why should someone be mandated to spend a week in 3rd world country or to work in retail job?

I know I would be very easily agitated in a retail job (I doubt I'd make it pas the first day) that's why I work in manufacturing....I don't have to put up a fake smile or pretend to care about a pissed off person or if I hurt someones feelings.

I'll say it again...So people would appreciate all they have here in this country.

Let's face it, the majority, (yep, I said majority), of people in this country don't appreciate what they have.

I know a lot of people that have spent time helping those less fortunate than themselves, and it changes lives. I would say that 100% of the time, people have a better appreciation for what they have after seeing "in person" what others don't.

You might say, "but why do we have to go to a 3rd world country? Why can't we simply help the less fortunate here?". Well you can, and that would be a good start. However, when you're in another country, and can't simply go home on a whim because you've had enough, there's no doubt you have a higher understanding of appreciation for the good old U.S. of A. Coming home has a whole new meaning after one of these experiences.
