Phillies are done IMO. Rollins, slowing a declining a rapid pace. Utley has a shot knee, Ibanez can't hit, and Howard can't hit a curveball. Unless the 4 aces have a career year I see this year as the 1991 A's who had all the pitching in the world but declined and had a lost year.

Pitching can't win a world series?

The 2010 Giants beg to differ.

Yes, I know, they had key guys like Renteria, Posey, and Cody Ross at times, but pitching dominated that team just as it does the Phillies, except this year's Phils rotation is arguably better than the Giants of last year.

Ryan Howard can still rake. Ibanez can be good at times. Rollins is still as good as Renteria was. Rollins missed a LOT of games last year.

I still see it in this team and I'm a Yankees fan, for crying out loud. Then again, the Red Sox had a lot of good pitching a few years ago and it fell apart for them as well.

hamate bone surgery is known to zap power production for a while, even after recovery...so it may be 2013 before we see any pop out of dom. :?
I don't want to completely contradict this because it has been in the past the typical time frame for recovery, however two more recent cases dealing with considerable prospects (albeit at the college level) breaking their hamate's have seen quick recoveries: Pedro Alvarez and Jackie Bradley Jr. Just something to perhaps cast some optimism over what is otherwise an unfortunate injury.

Carlos Santana also had his hamate bone removed after breaking it during winter ball prior to last season. He was good to go from the beginning of spring training, with little to no effect on his power production throughout 2010.

As good as Do Brown is, i don't think Philly should be concerned, they sill have their 4 aces.

They do have their 4 aces but I'd be worried about their offense. They are going to have to win 1-0. Isn't Utley taking cortisone shots for his knee too?

The Giants had an average/above average offense all year, plus their bull-pen was much better than this years Phillies. Starting to doubt them now.

Utley, Ibanez, Howard, etc. with that pitching = win. Even the Pirates with that rotation would have at least a winning record.

Nobody can say WS for sure, but they are still a serious contender. Dom Brown is not a make or break deal for them, he wasn't last year.

Actually the Giants were 9th in run production and lead the Majors in HR after the break. That's one thing everyone forgets, they were an above average hitting team with a great rotation and good defense. The Phillies are missing two out of three of those elements.

As far as Belt as the ROY, if he continues to have a good spring ans is called up in May then he has a shot. Most publication have Belt/Brown/Freeman as the favorites this season so no reason to leave Belt out of the conversation because a Giants fan brings him up.

Brown will be back this season, with almost 75% of the season to play. There still is a month before the season even starts so I wouldn't be too worried unless his rehab goes poorly.

I know it's not the best of examples, but Joe Mather had the surgery in late 08..

Went from 31 Homers in 2007 to 4 HR in 58 Games in 2009 and 10 last year.

~At least I just traded for a 2008 EEE /50 Auto last week~

Aside from that, I'm hoping he comes back strong.

Yeah good luck with that, that's the injury Ryan Strieby had that has kept him from playing full seasons the last three years. I also think he would have been in the Majors by last year had it not been for such a big set back. It could be a few years before Brown is 100% again, if he ever gets to 100%.

Brief recent history of players breaking their hamate bones: Pedro Alvarez, Yonder Alonso, Dustin Pedroia, who managed to play through the injury effectively, David Ortiz and Edwin Encarnacion came back okay, the injury killed the careers of Darin Erstad, Brad Nelson, and Wily Mo Pena.

Strasburg needs TJ surgery and people still hype him, Brown needs surgery and will return in weeks not a year. So Brown is done to never return again. So I shouldn't sell my 3 Contenders of Brown and run for the hills?

You are starting to doubt them now? Because a guy who was going to platoon in RF is injured? I guess I didn't get the memo that as Dom Brown goes, so go the Phillies in 2011  ::facepalm::

The Phillies 2011 rotation is head and shoulders better than the 2010 Giants rotation, in my opinion. Lincy and Cain are nice, but come on-Halladay, Lee, Oswalt, Hamels? The Phillies also have the better offense. Bullpen, I don't know(don't know that much about either 'pen).

The Giants weren't world beaters last year-they got hot at the right time. I would take the 2011 Phillies over that team-but it all boils down to how your team performs for a 1 month stretch in October/November.

And, I'm not a fan of either. But, the Giants love was a bit much.
