Re: Donruss/Leaf Beckett Samples (thead to help player collectors)

These cards, both silver and gold, are completely under the hobby radar.

Think of it like this, there's sooooooo many player super collectors on fcb and yet so many still need these cards in both versions, even though the cards are ten or more years old!

I have two major scores heading my way soon: sealed Becketts from Nov. and Dec 2002, with samples! The Nov. has a 2002 Leaf R&S, the Dec. has a 2002 Donruss Originals. Hoping I get a couple of Gold Samples!

Good Luck - These have to be the most unervalued cards out there. I still have never to this day seen a single Beckett Gold Sample of Larkin. By far some of the hardest non-serial #'d cards to find. I still need quite a few of the silver versions!

Let me know if you come across any Kirby Puckett's?

Well, that went poorly. Got those two 2002 Becketts in today; the Leaf R&S Sample was Mark Mulder, and the Donruss Originals Sample was Derek Jeter. EXCEPT...when I tried to take the Jeter off the insert card, it ripped a chunk of paper off the back. At least the old Becketts are a fun read. Remember back when Adam Dunn was a listed star, and Kaz Ishii RCs booked for $6-$10 and up? Or when Brett Myers and Barry Zito were the best RCs of the 2000 RC class? Or a Bowman Chrome Pujols RC booked for $300?

What card number is the Mulder?

I ran some numbers and came up with some possible PRs for these samples. According to the December 2002 magazine's circulation statement, Beckett printed a shade over 285,000 copies of the October issue. At one card per issue for a 100 set, that's 2850 total samples. Golds make up 10%, so that would make 285 Golds and 2565 Silvers.

However, Beckett also states that out of the 285K copies printed, almost 87,500 copies were never distributed. That makes for a net distribution of 197,500 copies. In theory, that leaves us with around 1780 Silvers and 200 Golds.

But then again...and I don't know the answer to this, as I was out of the hobby at this time, but were these samples only included in copies sent to mail subscribers? If that's the case, then we end up with a PR of 500 Silvers and 50 Golds (based on mail subscription of 55K copies). This seems more plausible considering how hard these are to find.

They were inserted in the store copies for sure. I remember getting a couple of these samples back in the day from store bought copies.

OK, so then the higher numbers (1780/200) must be closer to the actual PR. The question is, regardless of how many they made, where the XXXX are they all???

Re: Donruss/Leaf Beckett Samples (thead to help player collectors)

Although, I wonder how many copies were trashed with cards inside and how many are still stuck in the magazine's.

On top of that, how many are buried in common boxes because they look exactly like base cards from the front.

Stumbled across this info on basecardpedia.com. Don't recall this being mentioned elsewhere, but I always thought the Beckett samples were parallels of the full sets. I might have to go through the entries for all the 2002-2003 DLP product on baseballcardpedia.com to see if there are checklists for which cards from the other products have Beckett samples.

2002 Donruss Originals Beckett Samples
Randomly inserted into the November, 2002 issue of Beckett Baseball Card Monthly was one card from a 100-card set previewing the upcoming Donruss Originals set. Each card is stamped "SAMPLE" on the back in either silver or gold foil. About 10% of the production run was stamped in Gold.
