One interesting little note. Spoke to a solid source tonight that felt there was a 60% chance #Pirates second-rounder Josh Bell signs. #MLB

That would be a shock. Was at a fan forum last week that Rangers GM Jon Daniels was asked about Bell. Daniels said they really liked him but honestly believed he wanted to go to college and that Bell wasn't mentally ready for the grind of professional baseball.

Sorry if I missed it:

The Colorado Rockies announced Thursday the team has signed outfielder Dillon Thomas, their fourth-round pick in June’s draft out of Westbury Christian High School in Houston.

Thomas will report to Rookie Casper.

The Rockies have signed seven of their top 10 picks from the draft. First-round pick Tyler Anderson, third-rounder pick Peter O’Brien and ninth-rounder Thomas Stripling remain unsigned among the Rockies’ top picks.

They need to get the bolded before I start getting some of their USA high-end

Norris is in Dunedin for a physical. I'm hoping for some good news. That would be a major signing.

Derrick Loveless, a 27th rounder out of HS, has signed with the Jays and rumour has Matt Dean, a supposedly extremely tough sign, has also agreed to terms with the Jays.

Players need to watch what they say, or else the team that drafted them might not want to sign them.

Case in point --

Draft pick Houchins unlikely to sign with Nats
By Bill Ladson / MLB.com | 08/09/11 11:31 AM ET

CHICAGO -- Shortstop Zach Houchins, a 15th-round selection in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, said Monday it is unlikely that he will sign a professional contract with the Nationals.

Houchins said he hasn't heard from the club since June after it was discovered that he made what were deemed racist and homophobic remarks on his Twitter page.

Teams have until 12:01 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Aug. 16, to come to terms with their draftees, meaning official notification has to be in the Commissioner's Office when the clock strikes midnight. A text message to general manager Mike Rizzo was not returned.

Houchins told MLB.com back in June that he is not a racist, and he apologized to the front office.

"I called [the Nationals]. I apologized to Mr. Roy Clark [the team's assistant general manager]. I apologized to him for what was said on Twitter," Houchins said. "[Clark said], 'Yeah, anything you said on Twitter was completely unacceptable.' I understood where he was coming from. That was pretty much the conversation.

"I'm not a racist, not at all. ... Four of my best friends, two of them are black, one of them was my roommate. He is probably one of the closest people I've ever been around. ... Me and my four best friends became so close, it's just how we talk. It wasn't anything derogatory or anything like that. It's just how we talk."

Houchins is expected to return to Louisburg College, where he hit .349 with 35 RBIs.

13th round selection of the Mets, Phillip Evans, was at Citi Field last night. Would be really nice if the Mets could snag him away from San Diego St.

Re: Draft Picks Official Signings Thread

Here are the most recent developments for the Top 10 unsigned 1st rounders:

Gerrit Cole and Danny Hultzen:

• There is no sign of any deal yet for the top two draft choices, Gerrit Cole or Danny Hultzen, and both negotiations are expected to go right to the Aug. 15 deadline. Cole, a UCLA rigthander who has hit 102 mph on the gun, is looking to come close to but not match the record $15.067 million bonus Stephen Strasburg received two years ago from the Nationals while Hultzen, a lefthander who went 31-5 with a 2.18 ERA at the University of Virginia, is looking for $13 million plus school from the Mariners. Neither player is moved by No. 3 pick Trevor Bauer getting $4.4 million guaranteed with a chance to make $7 million from the Diamondbacks. The teams can point to recent contracts with hope (the Pirates paid 2010 No. 2 overall pick Jameson Taillon $7 million and the Mariners paid 2009 No. 2 overall pick Dustin Ackley $7.5 million), but both teams would be taking a big chance if they fail to sign their respective picks. The possible replacement picks for 2012 aren't considered on the level of these two pitchers. The Pirates have been making progress this year but still have to rally to snap their 18-year losing streak, and the Mariners passed up big hitters (Anthony Rendon, Bubba Starling) to choose a pitcher they loved to round out a superb rotation of the future.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/w ... ose.reyes/

Dylan Bundy:

Jordan said that the club remains in negotiations with top-pick Dylan Bundy, second-rounder Jason Esposito and sixth-rounder Nick Delmonico, but "nothing has changed" in regards to their status. The Orioles have until midnight Monday to sign their 2011 draft picks.

"We’re working on it and we’re trying to make our points, but you have to have a willingness to get something done on both sides right now and that may not be until Monday," Jordan said. "That’s the way it is. There are things going on. We’re working on it. I wish I had a whole lot to give you, but there's really not much I can say."

Jordan will likely talk to Bundy's camp later today and tomorrow, but as expected, it would be very surprising if anything gets done there too much before Monday's deadline.

Bubba Starling:

It's not compelling. It's not interesting. At this point, the only word to describe the ongoing negotiations (or make that, waiting game) between Bubba Starling and the Kansas City Royals is "predictable." That's because Scott Boras is involved as Starling's agent which means everything will be drawn out down to the wire, costing the Royals millions and costing Starling the chance to play significant summer baseball this year.

The threat is that Starling could head to the Nebraska Cornhuskers as a quarterback recruit and follow his love of football. However, that would cost him millions of dollars -- likely up to $9 or 10 million -- and it's hard to imagine many 18-year-olds consulting with a mega-agent doing that. After all, not only would Starling risk injury and the chance to play baseball professionally, but his agent would also be risking financially as well, hoping that Starling becomes an NFL-level quarterback -- a tall order for a guy who just walked for his high school graduation.

The nearly-guaranteed reality at this point despite any quotes that you hear is that Starling will sign on the dotted line at the stroke of midnight (or somewhere thereabouts) on August 15 and find a home in the Kansas City minor league system. And we will yawn all the way knowing that it was likely to play out like this since the beginning.

Anthony Rendon:

With the Aug. 15 midnight deadline looming a week away, the Nationals have yet to make any real progress in reaching agreements with their top four draft picks, General Manager Mike Rizzo said. The lack of serious discussions is typical for the top choices, who tend not to sign until minutes before the deadline.

Rizzo has spoken with the representatives for the players but hasn’t made significant headway. Again, though, it would be more surprising if the Nationals were nearing agreements. The Nationals are still expected to sign all four players by the deadline.

The Nationals have yet to sign first round picks infielder Anthony Rendon, pitcher Alex Meyer, supplemental round pick outfielder Brian Goodwin and third round pick Matt Purke. Scott Boras, with whom the Nationals reached massive deals for Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper the past two seasons, represents Rendon, Meyer and Goodwin

All four have undergone physicals. The Nationals administered a physical to Purke at Nationals Park, while the three Boras clients had theirs done independently. The Nationals are satisfied all four have no health issues. Both Purke and Rendon dealt with shoulder issues in college, which made their health of particular interest.

Archie Bradley:

His bags are packed, but Archie Bradley said an NCAA-certification issue prevented him from reporting Wednesday for the start of preseason football drills at the University of Oklahoma.

Bradley says he plans to report to the Sooners when the issue is resolved - if he hasn't reached a deal with Major League Baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks before the Aug. 15 signing deadline.

The Broken Arrow High School standout pitcher and quarterback was chosen by the Diamondbacks with the seventh overall pick in the June draft.

"I've talked to Arizona one time. It's just not something I'm really worrying about. If (the Diamondbacks) want to sign me, they'll get a deal done," he said.

"Right now, college football is my future, and my eyes and mind are set on going to OU and starting football practice. I have to start looking forward to what I can control, and that's getting ready to play football at OU."

Francisco Lindor:

With the signing deadline for this year’s Major League Baseball draft picks less than a week away, it appears negotiations between the Cleveland Indians and their first-round selection, Francisco Lindor from Montverde Academy, could come down to the wire.

Teams have until Aug. 15 to sign their draft picks.

A call Tuesday to Lindor’s advisor David Meter was not returned.

Lindor, a shortstop, was selected by the Indians with the eighth overall pick in June. He also has signed a college baseball grant to play at FSU. Cleveland made Lindor only the fourth Central Florida high school player to be picked in the draft’s top 10 since 1998. He joins Apopka Zack Greinke (taken sixth in ‘02 by the Kansas City Royals), Kissimmee Gateway;s Joe Torres (taken 10th in ‘00 by the Angels) and Lake Brantley’s Felipe Lopez (taken eighth in 1998 by the Toronto Blue Jays).

Javier Baez:

INSIDE PITCHES: Cubs scouting director Tim Wilken made his annual visit to the Chiefs on Monday and Tuesday. He’ll head with the team to Kane County. He said that he is optimistic that the Cubs will sign first-round pick Javier Baez before Monday’s signing deadline.

George Springer:

HOUSTON -- Astros first-round pick George Springer III made his first visit to Houston on Friday afternoon, but it wasn't to sign a contract. Springer took and passed a team physical, getting the procedure out of the way in advance of the Aug. 15 signing deadline.

Springer briefly visited Minute Maid Park before hopping a plane back to his home in Connecticut.

"It's an incredible ballpark," Springer told MLB.com. "The atmosphere and the whole feel of the stadium was something special to me. [Houston] is an incredible place. I didn't know it was as big as it was."

Springer, 22, was drafted with the No. 11 overall pick out of the University of Connecticut, where he hit .343 with 12 homers, 77 RBIs, 31 stolen bases and a .450 on-base percentage during his junior season. He briefly met Astros manager Brad Mills on Friday.

"He seemed like a great guy," Springer said. "He's a baseball guy and was fun to be around for a while. I was only there a short time. It was basically in and out."

Astros general manager Ed Wade wanted to get the physical done in case Springer signs near the deadline.

"If this thing drifts to the Aug. 15 deadline, we don't have to set our hair on fire at that point to try to get an agreement in place," Wade said. "He passed it with flying colors. It was an in-and-out deal. [Team medical director] Dr. [David] Lintner and the people at Methodist Hospital paved the way for him. The hard part is done. Now the easy part comes, getting him signed."

Wade said he expects negotiations to continue until the deadline. The Astros are hoping to sign Springer, third-round pick Jack Armstrong -- who's currently pitching in the Cape Cod League -- and 13th-round pick Horace Stubblefield, a right-handed pitcher from Lufkin, Texas.

Wade reiterated Springer's trip to Houston wasn't a recruiting visit.

"I don't think it's fair to bring a kid in under those circumstances and it shifts into a sales pitch," he said. "I did tell him what a really good organization we've got and how we would really like to have a lot more younger players coming through the system and how we're the land of opportunity."

Last week, Springer and his father met with the general manager of the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League. His father said the meeting was done for his son to explore his options for beginning his professional career in case he doesn't sign with Houston.
