FORT MYERS — Red Sox left-hander Drake Britton was arrested early Saturday morning on a number of traffic violations, including the suspicion of drunken driving, according to the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

The arrest, made in the pre-dawn hours Saturday morning, occurred after a police officer observed Britton's black Silverado traveling far beyond the posted 45 mph limit. At one point, according to the report, Britton was clocked at 111 mph.

With the officer in pursuit, Britton, according to the report, swerved between vehicles, eventually driving off the road, over a curb, down a decline and then drove through and knocked down a fence. Britton attempted to drive into the woods before finally coming to a stop. The officer approached Britton and decided he did not pose a threat. When the officer asked for an ID, Britton turned over his Bank of America Visa card. Britton admitted to drinking and the officer observed slurred speech, bloodshot watery eyes and the strong odor of alcohol.
He was charged with DUI, DUI property damage and reckless driving.

The Red Sox released this statement: "This is a matter that the Red Sox take very seriously, and it is being addressed. The club will not make further comment on this matter."

Britton, 23, was the Red Sox' 23rd pick of the 2007 draft and had been in big-league camp at the start of spring training for the first time. On Monday, the Red Sox announced he had been optioned to Portland (AA). Last year, Britton finished the season in Portland, posting a 3.72 ERA and a 4-7 record.

He's more of a duh duh idiot. Then again, he's a ballplayer. First player baseball book I ever read was Ball Four. All others have seemed like such drivel and idiotic, including the recent Francona book, that I have to remind myself that most ballplayers are first class morons. No offense, but they're not paid to think.

Drake was clearly confused - he'd been told he was being assigned to AA Portland, not AA, as in Alcoholics Anonymous.
