On top of collecting baseball autographs I also collect author autographs. I decided about three weeks ago to test how often e-mailing authors works out. I found two lists of authors, did website searches and contacted any of them that had e-mails listed somewhere.
This may be totally uninteresting, but I thought I'd put down my results somewhere.
Total number of authors contacted: 207
Breakdown of responses:
30 Negative
98 Positive (no SASE needed)
76 Send SASE
3 foreign authors that asked me in which country Texas is located.
Of these, two have sent free hardback books, two have sent free soft cover books (one sent every book he had ever written), and one author sent two magazines.
Conclusion: Authors rock. Some foreign authors need geography lessons.
Now, don't be too fooled yet. 98 have said they would send, but I have not received from that many. I don't have final numbers on how many of those 98 told me they would send but will never get around to it.
Here are scans of those that I have received so far. If you can't identify an autograph just look at properties. The end of the URL will have their name.
