I won the following auctions:

(7) 1995 Bowman's Best Scott Rolen PSA 10 - $36
[ebay:2id5goth]220397874483[/ebay:2id5goth]

(18) 1993 Stadium Club Murphy Preston Wilson PSA 9 - $0.99
[ebay:2id5goth]220397887571[/ebay:2id5goth]

Both auctions show shipping of $8 and there's nothing about combined shipping so I figure the worst case scenario is I have to pay $16 to ship (despite even that being a crock but I was willing to deal). I request a total from the seller and I get a $10 combined shipping price via Priority Mail, no problem, for that I assume should be a total of $46.99. It turns out the guy decides to put REQUIRED shipping insurance on the package for... $38 additional!!!!!!

Neither auction requires insurance, in fact, both of them state it isn't even offered. In the meantime, the seller won't respond to any of my E-mails. Do I have any recourse at all or am I s.o.l.?

I would email ebay immediately and would not pay. Not only is the user taking advantage of ebay on fee's through shipping they are ripping off the consumer on insurance. Leave negative feedback immediately. It will be worth the NPB if ebay goes against you (which I highly doubt)

I can insure a piano and mail it to Australia for less then $46.99.

your not SOL. if he's forces you to pay that, just don't pay. all he can do is file an NPB strike against you and if you explain what the shipping charges are to ebay they will remove it because they are clearly outragious. the seller can not leave you a negative.

The guy is new and has 8 for feedback.....give him a day or two to respond.....he might not even know what he sent you. Email him again and ask him to double check the costs there may be an error. If he then says there isn't an error or doesn't respond then get excited.

When did you email him last? How long has it been since the first email sent?

maybe you should let the monkey know about this thread as well. i'm sure that they would like to continue selling on ebay. with a lot of who's who in the hobby here, it would suck for them to have so many people avoid them so early on in their ebay career.

Last E-mail was 5 days ago. I just had a thought though - perhaps he meant to insure for the VALUE of $38, since the auction totals added together are roughly $38? Either way some communication on his behalf would help the situation. I'll update as I get more info, thanks for the input everyone.

I tend to stay away from those kind of auctions since I know damn good and well he is gouging on the shipping.I saw a Strawberry auto I wanted that ended today but the seller wanted $8 for shipping and while I know I could have won it and still not have overpaid(imo) I wouldn't give him the luxury of screwing me on the shipping.Better yet...I could have just bought it and then left a big fat neg after the fact.I think sellers already make enough on $3 shipping. If you are afraid you will lose your hind end on a card...don't sell it.Please don't try to make up for it on the shipping.

I agree with everything said but the bolded...

Like a lot of sellers, I use new sleeve + Top loader + team bag, wrapped in bubble wrap and in a new bubble mailer. Also, always DC. This always comes to $2.50 - $3.00(inc shipping and materials) per and I include free combo also. Despite the fact I never charge more than $2.50.

Point being, I do not think many are making 'enough' off of $3.00 shipping. Rather, just covering it...

The OP purchased 25 PSA slabbed cards. Gonna be hard to ship that for $3...

I have to agree with ya (Sorry Pred :D ) as I charge $3 shipping "and" handling & I am making nothing on that amount (heck man, I might be losing several cents  )! :D

Regarding OP- Nothing new to say on the matter. If you don't agree with shipping, don't pay. He stated $8 shipping in each box with insurance OPTIONAL.

Regarding $3 shipping- When I ship for $3, I make roughly $1, BUT that is a flat charge for as many auctions you win in a 2 day period and I ship free if total order is more than $20 ($10 for FCB members shameless plug).

Therefore, I only make money on shipping WHEN you buy one thing or two things.

It's call an incentive to buy more!

Not people who do that but the majority of folks who send me a card in a toploader and a penny sleeve(average cost around 8 cents because a penny sleeve is equal to a penny and a toploader can be purchased in a pack of 25 for $2.00) and a regular old bubble mailer with $1 and some change for shipping have made money on it.Whether it covers their time(which we all know it only takes a few moments to print up a label and stick it in the mailbox for outgoing mail) or the fees they pay...I could care less.I have no problem with it.But if you are just slight under doubling your price on shipping from what it actually costs...then in my mind you make some sort of profit off of that. What its used to pay for has no concern to me.

But I do see some people charging more and more on shipping and in my mind anything over $3.50 is a little high which is why I won't buy unless I want the card badly enough. If you are buying multiple items from one seller...its up to them to combine or not but if they won't I won't buy from them.Your going to make more money off of me one way or the other whether its more cards I am buying or me overpaying for shipping.

So something like $8 is too much. Its also why I passed on that Strawberry I mentioned which is why I brought it up to further illustrate my point.

When you add on $38 worth of insurance to it without saying so in your auction that insurance is mandatory...he is jipping the OP.Yes it would be hard to ship them for $3 and I wouldn't think anyone would ship that much for only $3 but we see what he originally wanted to charge and the OP was fine with that but then the dude adds $38 on to the total.

Don't get me wrong...I know people want to be paid for every minute of their time and in reality...the only way you can get the value back on certain cards is to charge a little more on the shipping.I have no problem with that. But if I feel something is being done unecessarily I as a buyer won't make a purchase.

$8 is ridiculous (I'm not sure I'd have bid, unless the lot of card's was a really great deal with the $8 accounted for in the final SV)! As for dropping the bubble-mailer in the mailbox, I won't ever do that again as I've been burned early on in my Ebay "career" (I drop my bubble-mailer's at the PO, no if's, and's, or but's)! :D

Oh I always take any card I mail to someone to the post office to make sure I get everything squared away but if I was selling on ebay a lot...I'd do it all at home.Just too much time and running around.Too much of an inconvenience.

As for the card in question...it ended for like $4 and some change so it would have been roughly $12 total which wasn't bad but the fact the seller was charging what he was for shipping made me say no.He could have been from over seas but I do not remember seeing that and I wouldn't have cared even if he had to charge that much.I'd understand but I still would not buy it.I'd rather wait around and find another one.

Another example is there are quite a few Bagwells I was looking at buying a while back and they were all listed at BIN for $0.99 but the shipping was like $4.To me...that is trying to push it a little. Why not just charge $2 for the card and $3 to ship?

More fees on listing and closing. It would almost negate any extra you would be making on the card.
