Anyone ever done this with a high value card? Besides the obvious dangers is this a cash transaction? Is paypal even involved?

I did once as it was being sold by a card shop in the area.
I actually logged in to paypal from my phone and paid him after I had the card in front of me.
He got his money and I left. I imagine when youre dealing with an individual you have to be more cautious, so I'd do the deal inside a McDonalds or other public place.

I guess I should be more clear.

Currently selling a high priced item that would be hot locally. Buyer contacts me about local pick up, my concern is how am I covered from the person saying we never met? Should I request a cash in person transaction at a bank?

Money order fully filled out from the buyer to you with their info on it. Take a picture of the MO before cashing it. Have them mark "item received" in the memo area

Then he can say he paid and never got the item.
MO puts it in writing.
Its on the seller to prove they delivered more than the buyer to prove they paid when it comes to ebay.

Exactly. Why involved paypal or ebay for that matter. I've done a few in person transactions and it's always cash. I usually ask to meet them at the post office closest to my house. It's worked out the few times I've done it.

Edit to add...WHY involve ebay. I'd take the item down and tell him if he wants it you can do it off ebay.

They have never done an in person pick up and for whatever reason thinks they need to be involved. I already asked to move it outside and they seemed to be freaked out I even asked. But they just agreed to cash at my local bank so I guess we shall see then, they also clicked the local pick up option I added so at least its on record so far. All they can do they in leave a negative saying they never got the item and I can in return say I never got payment so if they would like to pay twice for the same item I am cool with that

Money orders can be faked.

Cash is simple and riskless. Other than being an ass, there would be no reason to file an item not received against the seller. EBay won't do anything, because they only protect Paypal transactions. They can leave you a neg, and you can file an NPB on them which is completely pointless. Cash is the only way to go for an in-person deal. I've done it and it works flawlessly.

Agreed. Ive done in person a few times and will accept nothing but cash. As the seller, your actually at risk if you take anything else. Why take the risk?

I've done it for concert tickets before. Like the other posters noted, cash is king, money orders can be forged.
I had the buyer meet me near my house, counted the cash, gave them the tickets (but then again I carried a gun).
I would meet in a busy place, to protect yourself. Buyer would probably appreciate it as well.....

I'm just about positive the buyer is assuming the risk in a case like this. They'd have no documentation or anything to prove they paid. If I was the seller and accepting cash in a transaction like this - I would not leave feedback or mark the item as paid until it was marked off as received with positive feedback.

After reading through this - all I can picture is neither side fully trusting the other and both parties holding up their phones (or whatever device) recording each other through the whole process.
