Did you use the "counteroffer" option, or just message the seller?
If you just let the offer sit there and let the buyer decide on his own, he has every right to retract it (according to ebay rules, I still hate retractions!).
I personally don't like it when I make an offer and it just sits there with no response, or any idea on what the seller will take. If you want to negotiate, make an official counteroffer through the system and see what happens. Then whatever happens is binding.
Just a message saying you have a better offer lets the person with the offer free to change their mind.
