I rarely sell, so hopefully some of the more experienced sellers can help me out here. My girlfriend recently sold an old ipod on ebay. It was the first time she had sold anything, and I tried to be helpful, while not being overly opinionated on the subject. The item sold, and I had thought she had taken care of the fees. Today, she got a notification that the direct payment to the account on file had been declined. I believe the old account had been linked to a bank account of her mother's, since that's who the account had originally been created for, from when the account was set up 5 or 6 years ago. Ebay is now showing an outstanding balance of $15, when the original fees had been under $2.

Is there any way to get them to overlook this, since she was a first time seller and it was such a small amount? What is the next step that she should take? It seems ridiculous to pay over $15 in fees when the item only sold for about $20. Thanks for any help or advice anyone can offer.

What does the recent activity show when you go to view the invoice? Is it possible that there was a previous balance? Something isn't adding up there...

This is the account activity:

Credit Card Payment -- Automatic Monthly Billing -- Thank You Jan-27-10 16:47:47 PST Payment -- -$1.97
Direct Pay Returned Item (Jan-25)
Reason: Invalid account number Jan-26-10 11:39:10 PST Payment $1.97 --
Direct Pay Returned Item Fee Jan-26-10 11:39:10 PST Other $15.00 --
Direct Pay Payment -- Automatic Monthly Billing -- Thank You Jan-21-10 11:25:18 PST Payment -- -$1.97

They must be crazy if they think they'll get a $15 fee out of a $2 balance.

That's new. A few years ago, I had an expired CC on file and it bounced like 3 times before they emailed me to resolve the issue. No fee there.

Well if they won't work with you on this then let them close that account. It's a old account, as you state, and you can always open another one.

An email, message, or notification would have been nice. They didn't send a notification until today, and the fee was already there. It's almost laughable, since this was the one and only item she has ever sold, and the final value was barely over what they're trying to get in fees.

I'll try sending an email tomorrow explaining the situation, but I'm not holding my breath. I still have my account, and she almost never uses ebay. But her account had been getting ebay bucks, while mine isn't, so I had been buying from her account for the last few months. Sucks to lose that 2%, but I don't spend enough to make it worth paying the $15 to keep the account from getting NARU'd.
