I have been watching an auction for the past week and have been on the fence about bidding in fear of a shill. Now I know that you should bid what you feel comforatable paying etc but at the end of the day we all would like to win a card below our max bid.

So I ask you, O'wise FCB community: do you bid on private listings, don't bid, don't care, or don't even notice some listings are private?

I've never understood the point of private listings since you can't see who is bidding anyway. Only one reason to do it in my opinion, and that is to shill.

I don't understand private listings at all... Don't know how you go about doing them, their purpose, etc. Is there an additional fee? Do you have to qualify to have a private listing or why wouldn't everyone just do it?

Stay away from those as these is something shady going on even if its not shilling, I could see if you were strictly a highend buyer and you don't want anyone knowing you ebay id even when feedback is left but as a seller you should not have things private unless your up to no good.

Except for shilling I wouldn't be worried. You should be protected with payment etc through PP / eBay. But if its an time that may come up again , I may pass on a Private one.

Sniping keeps shillers out of the game, other than laying out a proxy bid that they would not mind if the card didn't sell for.

I agree though that a private auction can be shady and most i see seem to be somewhat questionable. You can't see exact bidders, but you can tell when one bidder is bidding and when it's numerous bidders in a normal auction and you can't in a private auction. Too much room for abuse.

How do you tell if it's private or not? Maybe I've been bidding on some and don't even notice, but it sounds like they are rare and not the norm.
