Very scary how few actually lived up to it. Only time will tell with Stras

To this day, I don't get how Abbott was as hyped as he was.

I haven't been much into amateur baseball until recent years, so I don't remember many of those guys being hyped up pre-draft. Prior will always serve as a warning, though, for "can't miss" prospects. There seemingly was NOTHING wrong with him... guess not.

I would love to see Strasberg develop into the next dominant pitcher a la Clemens, Ryan, Randy Johnson, etc, but that's awful good company! Time will tell.

Man, oh man, I was dying to pull one of these in 1991 when that product came out:

Chipper was a footnote in that set compared to Todd, two things went wrong.

1. Todd's career
2. 6 billion copies of that card.

Then again, almost any card looked attractive next to the 1991 Fleer base set.

Dusty Baker killed Mark Prior

He might as well of chopped his arm completely off.

:(

It is a total shame...he didn't do Kerry Wood any favors either.

When Prior was on, I enjoyed watching him pitch as much as I have any pitcher I can recall.

Pitch 1: 95 on the black
Pitch 2: 95 on the black
Pitch 3: Slider in the dirt

Thank you for playing, your at bat has ended.

I was actually going to suggest that Mark Prior, for a couple seasons, showed what his hype was all about - especially in 2003. I always felt like he was a completely different "bust" then guys like McDonald, Van Poppel, Taylor, etc. I felt like he actually knew how to pitch IN ADDITION to his phenomenal stuff.

But thanks to Baker, we'll never know how great he could've been.

Interesting list, only A-Rod, Griffey and Bo Jackson lived up to the hype.

It's just amazing to me that of the most hyped prospects of all time, 6 of the 10 either had a good year and then faded, or never reached their potential. But the three who did reach their potential are two of the greatest baseball players of all time and one of the greatest all-around athletes of all time. Hit (in a big way) or miss with the guys on this list.

Strasburg is still TBD, of course.

It wasn't the innings as much as it was the pitch counts.

By the way, you guys are incorrect about Dusty Baker being the sole thing that ruined Mark Prior.

Prior damaged his shoulder surfing in the offseason back in California. The action of laying belly down on the board and paddling out was what started his shoulder problems. Dusty may not have helped by overusing him, but the surfing thing is what actually started his injury problems.

Little known fact.

I remember Clyde, same thing that happened to Prior. Went straight from high school to the show. Burned out his arm then shipped him down...too little, too late.

When you saw Mark Prior pitch in person, you saw something special. It didn't make sense that the ball came out as fast as it did with such an effortless-looking motion.

Not to be rude, but did you follow baseball in the late '80s?
Abbott won the Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the country in 1987.
He also won the Golden Spikes award as college baseball's best player.
He starred for the 1988 Olympic team.
He went straight to the Majors without pitching in a minor league game.
The fact that he had one hand added to his legend.
If he was playing today, the hype would be enormous.

Plus from what I can remember he had a pretty respectable career compared to some other names thrown out here...

Look at the prices that Pat Venditte gets just because he can pitch with both arms... He is a 25 year old reliever still in Single A.

Think about the hype the top pitching prospect from every draft gets, then multiple that because of the story of him having only 1 arm...
