I haven't played fantasy football in five years. After I left college, our core FF group went their separate ways and the allure of not having a live draft and doing everything online wasn't interesting to me. I got talked in to teaming up with my friend and joining his league with a bunch of people he knows. One of my favorite activities in a live draft is constantly talking **** and making jokes when someone makes a retarded pick. I was kind of hesitant to run my mouth to a bunch of guys I've never met, but whatever. I did it anyway.
Our draft was yesterday at 1. It should have been a red flag when I got there on time and no one else was there. By 1:25 eight of the 10 people finally showed up. The other two were roommates who were running late because one of them drunkenly left his keys in someones car. Ugh. They became the phone-in-******** for this first hour of the draft. I HATE the phone-in *******. He's the child molester of fantasy football players. I should have known I was in for disaster when the first guy picking chose Andre Johnson. Uhhh, ok. There was a strict two minute limit to pick which was somehow NEVER enforced. Someone took Vince Young in the 3rd round and followed it up with taking Sidney Rice in the 4th. In between tears of laughter, I let him know Rice is out at least half the season. Someone took Vincent Jackson (who might sit out the whole season) in the 6th. The Steelers D was taken in the FIFTH round. Colt McCoy was taken in the 15th round. I had to take over chalkboard duties after someone picked the Vikings D and the guy wrote down "Minisota" (you don't want to know how bad he butchered Visanthe Shiancoe's name. It was ugly).
We were the only team who did any hardcore preparing. And by "hardcore preparing," I mean we spent 20 minutes the day before copy/pasting ESPN's mock draft in to Microsoft Office while drinking beer at a bar. No one else even brought a computer. Everyone showed up with fantasy football mags (which is why the ******* draft took over 5 hours).
At least half the people picked guys who had already been chosen (including one guy who tried to pick Eli Manning when he'd been chosen 45 seconds before by the previous guy). Beanie Wells was drafted in the 6th round, then Chris Wells was drafted in the 9th round....which led to a FIFTEEN MINUTE argument on whether or not Beanie and Chris were in fact the same person.
Our team wasn't even that great (we got, in order, Ray Rice, P Manning, B Marshall, Romo, R Mathews, DeSean Jackson, Tony Gonzalez (nearly murdered my teammate after this pick), Pierre Thomas, Anquan Boldin, Cowboys D, Rob Bironas, Shiancoe, Arian Foster, Bernard Berrian, Forsett, Stafford). Tried to draft a balanced team that won't be destroyed if one guy goes down with an injury. Other people drafted a running back in the first round then didn't pick another back till the 11th round. One guy didn't bother picking a qb until the 8th round (he got Carson Palmer, who wasn't even listed on ESPN's top 160).
What a disaster. After the matchups were set on yahoo, I did a projected wins based on projected fantasy points. We're projected to go 15-0 winning every game by double digits.
Did I mention the buy in was $50 with $500 going to the winner?
