Faulk completely changed the RB position. Faulk was the first RB to put up the receiving yards and rushing yards.

Not to keep jumping all over this comment, but I have to give some respect to Marcus Allen earlier in his career (http://www.pro-football-reference.com/p ... leMa00.htm).

I do think Faulk was the more versatile back but both helped their teams win the Super Bowl. I think Faulk should be elected first or at the same time at Bettis.

An interesting note, the Colts traded Faulk for a 2nd and 5th round picks in the 1999 draft whereas the Rams previously traded Bettis for a 2nd round pick in 1996 and a 4th round pick in 1997. Seems their trade value back then was about the same.

Do you guys trhink if the Steelers win tomorrow that would help Jerome's chances in getting in?

And CAN they both get in this year? I thought I heard on the radio they couldn't.

Faulk was the type of plyayer you build an entire franchise around. I don't think you can say the same for Bettis. Bettis did great things, he's very deserving of 1st ballot, but Faulk was just IT. He did literally everything on the field. I seen him return kicks before. Watching him play was like effing poetry man.

I'm not even sure how this is a question. The difference is like 4000 yards!

Bettis averaged more than 4.0, 4 times. Faulk almost did 5.0 that many times!

I don't know how Bettis got so overrated. Pittsburgh does that to a player, I guess. When Dick LeBeau got in instead of FAR more deserving candidates, I cried a little. I have no problem with Dick being in, but there are about 40 players that're more deserving.

Faulk and Bettis aren't the only RB's w/ a shot this year. Martin was a great back himself and I'm sure he'll get some support from the voters as well.

The last play of Bettis' career should have been that goal line fumble vs. the Colts! Lucky for the Steelers that the guy who recovered and was running with it had been stabbed in the leg the night before by his crazy-ass girlfriend...
Don't blame it on him getting stabbed and then tackled by Ben, blame it on the drunken IDIOT kicker!!!
Fixed!

That loss hurt. On the positive I landed my Manning Contenders right after that loss. Carry on.

Yeah, Bettis and Faulk are the only running backs with a **** this year. Martin was good, but he's a diiiiiiiistant third in this discussion.

Save losing in his SB appearance, Martin outperformed Bettis in every way, shape, and form. Martin just didn't have the team around him to beat the Packers, who were in the prime of their dynasty. If you want to just isolate SB stats, Martin racked up better yards and touchdowns compared to Bettis in their respective SB appearance, but that's not really solid ground for comparison.

Not only did Martin put up more rushing yards in fewer years than Bettis, but he also put up more touchdowns and about doubled Bettis' receiving production. Martin also fumbled less than Bettis, and rushed for 1,000 yards every season except for one (where he played 12 games).

Martin even outperformed Bettis in the playoffs. He put up better numbers in fewer games yet again. He averaged over one yard more per carry, and put up SIX TIMES as many receiving yards than Bettis. Bettis did manage one more rushing touchdown...and it only took him four more games.

Oh, and Curtis Martin has a perfect QB rating (158.3) compared to Bettis' 87.5! (That was inserted just for a chuckle)

So in my opinion, Curtis Martin > Jerome Bettis. His only setback is that he did it more quietly than Bettis.

I collected Faulk for a couple years...94_95_96 or so. I can't believe Faulk doesn't have a collector here.

Bettis to me is like Edgar Martinez for the Mariners.... great player, borderliine HOF, team and fan favorite, and was key to the team's success.

I think Faulk is lock this year, and I really hope Bettis (and Martinez) could get in someday...but it would be understandable if they didn't.

I admit Martin has been an afterthought for me, but you brought up some great stats! Amazing, really!

I think you can make a serious case that Martin is the most underrated RB of all time. His career numbers are off the charts. I mean 4th all time in rushing yards, 12th all time in rushing TDs, almost 500 receptions, and 84 yards per game over his career. I don't think he gets in first ballot but I think he definitely deserves to soon after.

Great post! I've always been a Bettis fan and thought he was fun to watch but Martin had the better career.

I 100% agree, for all that Martin accomplished during his career he deservesfar more recognition than he gets. IMO he had a 1st ballot career but will probably have to wait a year or two.

7 ET for the announcement. On NFLN too.

I think Faulk's a lock, Bettis probable.

And maybe Jessica Simpson is doing an intro... 8-)
