all time favorite angel-brian downing
i began watching baseball at 5 years old in 1986. my entire family is from orange county (anaheim/placentia), so naturally i became an angel fan. i took a liking to brian downing at a young age and as i got older, i began to truly appreciate his place in angels' history. he was with the team from 1978 through 1990 and if it was up to him, he would have retired an angel. he retired as the angels' all time leader in home runs and games played culminating in his induction into the angels hof last season.
Now: Robinson Cano. 1. He's just an all around great (not Pujols great I know), but he's great hitter, defense is one of the best 2B, and he doesn't act like an arse on or off the field. 2. I followed him through the minors too...at that point, I had never done that before.
Past/childhood: Roger Clemens. All 'roid/HGH talks aside, I always thought he was a hard worker...especially when he was young. Once, I read about his workout routine and it blew me away...very intense (and now I know about the 'roid/HGH "allegations....haha, and I'm still holding ot hope, even though it doesn't look good). He was absolutely dominating in the '80s. 20K's in a single game equals amazing. I still think his win/loss record would be much better if the BoSox could have backed him up and scored a few more runs at times. As much as I'm ashamed to admit it (sorry BoSox fans...no offense...you'll find out later why I say this...., I was a Boston fan during his tenure there. Then, there were the Blue Jay years. Just couldn't do it, couldn't be a Jays fan...strictly a Clemens fan. Then there came Yankee-time. Up until this time, I always respected the Yankee greats...never hated them or anything. Once he went to NY, I became enthralled with the Yanks, folloed every game, read books, got aggrivated when the lost, but never did I act like an idiot or a spoiled ass towards any other team. After the move, I've been a Yankee fan completely. This continued after he left and went to Houston....still followed him, but not the 'stros. WOW...sorry, went on a rant and off-topic stuff. My bad. I just started typing...
All time baseball- Andre Dawson
Current- Carlos Pena
All time football- Sweetness
current- Percy Harvin
Dawson was my favorite athlete of all because I grew up in Chicago and was 10 when Dawson came to the Cubs in '87 and I got to see him play quite often living there. I met him a few times and thought he was the most down to earth athlete ever. Didn't hurt that he raked his first year with the Cubs!
