While there's been speculation of a Jimmy Clausen free-fall in the draft that's now just two weeks away, there's an equal amount of speculation that he could be taken quite high. Well, the San Francisco 49ers have two picks in the draft's middle ten, and an uncertain franchise QB in Alex Smith. So does Clausen make sense with either the No. 13 or No. 17 pick? As you'll recall, the team did pretty well with another Notre Dame QB back in the 80's.
Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat took time to answer some questions from his Twitter faithful on Thursday, and such a scenario was brought to his attention. Maiocco: "If the 49ers believe Jimmy Clausen is clearly going to be a better quarterback than Alex Smith, then -- yes -- they should take Clausen if he remains unclaimed after the first 12 picks in the draft. As much as the 49ers might believe they're set up to win a lot of games in 2010, they must not lose sight of the big picture."
We should know more after Clausen's workout on Friday, and might have more of a clue on how far he'll last in the first round.
