I think when you start compiling that many stars, it costs money.
As for paying deadspin, the manufacturers should be doing that for the communities that are willing to put their neck on the line. Converting a "I want michael vick's autograph" type fan into a "i want mike vick's rookie card too!" type of fan is a huge deal.
If you have beef w/ paid advertising, you've clearly never stuck your neck out.

You'd think theyd want to get the guys to sign as cheaply as possible to bring in more foot traffic...
Under 100 for an autograph of a big current star is cheap, I don't know how many shows you go to, but that is cheap for shows I have been to. Almost any current Red Sox member costs at least 80 dollars at Boston shows.

payola is an acceptable way to get things done. As long as you are honest, theres nothing wrong with it.
